Honestly, I get why people think it’s a bit of a money grab, but I’m kinda on the fence about those online retainer places. I looked into them after my dog chewed up mine (yep, classic), and yeah, they’re cheaper, but the fit just didn’t compare for me. Maybe I’m picky? Or maybe it’s just peace of mind knowing my ortho’s got my back if something goes sideways. Still, the tech side of being able to 3D-print your own backup is wild... wish insurance would catch up though.

Totally get where you’re coming from. I tried one of those mail-order retainers after losing mine on vacation (left it in a napkin at a restaurant, facepalm), and honestly, it just didn’t feel the same. The price was tempting, but I kept second-guessing the fit. There’s something about knowing your ortho can tweak things if your bite feels off, you know? Especially since teeth really do keep shifting—my bottom ones started crowding again in my 30s and I thought I was done with all that.

The 3D-printing thing is wild though. My friend actually did a DIY backup using a scan from her last ortho visit—looked cool but I’d be way too paranoid to trust myself with that. And yeah, insurance needs to catch up big time. You’d think with all the tech advances, they’d at least cover replacements every few years. Maybe in another decade…
