braces vs clear aligners: which made you feel less self-conscious?

Braces always made me feel like I had a mouthful of metal in every photo.

Haha, I still remember my senior yearbook pic—full-on metal smile, and my mom swears it’s “adorable.” With aligners, I felt way less self-conscious, but man, I was paranoid about losing them at lunch. Guess there’s always a trade-off...

I totally get the paranoia about losing aligners. I kept mine in a case at lunch, but there were a couple times I nearly tossed them out with my napkin—major heart attack moment. Honestly, I felt way less self-conscious with aligners just because they’re nearly invisible, but I hated having to pop them out in public. Felt awkward, especially at restaurants.

With braces, I guess you just accept the “metal mouth” look and move on, but it’s always there in photos (and spinach is your enemy). One thing I’m curious about—did anyone else have trouble talking clearly with aligners? I had a bit of a lisp for the first week or two, and it made me more self-aware than I expected. Wondering if that’s just me or kind of normal?

I actually felt more self-conscious with aligners, weirdly enough. The whole “invisible” thing is great until you have to fish them out of your mouth in front of everyone at a work lunch... nothing like making eye contact with your boss while holding a drool-y tray. Lisping was real for me too, but it faded after a week or so. Braces were just there, no sneaky moments—just the occasional spinach disaster.

My kiddo went the clear aligner route and honestly, I was kind of jealous at first—no “brace face” jokes, no pokey wires. But you nailed it about the awkwardness. The first time we were out for pizza, she tried to be all stealthy about popping them out, but there’s just no graceful way to do it. It’s like a magic trick gone wrong: one second she’s normal, next second she’s got a mouthguard in her hand and a string of drool threatening to make an appearance. We both just sort of stared at it for a minute.

The lisp was real for her too, especially on day one. She sounded like she had a mouthful of marbles during her school presentation (which, of course, happened to be that day). It faded after a week or so, but she was super self-conscious about talking to friends in the meantime.

With braces, at least everyone knows what’s up—no surprises. Spinach-in-the-brackets is a classic, but kids these days are pretty chill about it. Plus, there’s something almost freeing about not having to worry about taking anything out before eating or drinking. My daughter would stress so much about forgetting her case or accidentally throwing them away with her lunch trash.

If I had to pick which made her less self-conscious? Braces win by a nose. Sure, they’re obvious, but the aligners came with their own brand of awkward. At least with braces, the only thing you have to remember is to smile and maybe check your teeth after salad...

My experience was almost the opposite—my teen felt way less self-conscious with aligners. The first week was rough, sure, but after that, she liked that most people didn’t even notice. Braces were a bigger deal for her socially, especially in photos. I guess it really depends on the kid and their priorities.
