Had both a single implant and then, a few years later, needed multiple teeth pulled at once (ugh). Honestly, I thought the single implant would be worse, but the extractions left me way more sore and puffy for days. Implant felt more “weird” but less painful. Anyone else have a preference? Did you find one recovery easier than the other, or am I just weirdly sensitive to extractions?
MULTIPLE EXTRACTIONS WERE WAY ROUGHER FOR ME TOO
I totally get where you’re coming from. I had a single implant last year, and then had to get three teeth pulled a few months ago (ugh, still shudder thinking about it). Honestly, I was convinced the implant would be the worst—I freaked myself out reading horror stories online. But the extraction recovery was a whole other level of miserable. My face swelled up so much, I barely recognized myself in the mirror. The pain was more “throbby” and constant, and I couldn’t really eat anything solid for days.
The implant just felt… odd? Like there was something foreign in my mouth, but it didn’t actually hurt much after the first day or two. I kept waiting for the pain to kick in and it never really did. With the extractions though, I was popping ice packs and Tylenol around the clock.
Maybe it’s just how our bodies react, but you’re definitely not alone. I’m super sensitive to dental stuff anyway, so maybe that’s part of it, but I’d take an implant over multiple extractions any day. Hang in there—it does get better, even if it’s slow.
I’m actually just gearing up for my first extraction next week (nervous doesn’t even cover it), so reading this is both comforting and terrifying. I always imagined the implant would be the big scary thing, but now I’m kind of dreading the extraction more. Did you have trouble sleeping after? Also, how long did it take before you could eat real food again? I’m a total wimp with mouth pain, so I’m bracing myself...
My kid had two teeth yanked last year and honestly, the extraction was way less dramatic than the build-up. She slept fine (Tylenol helped), but eating was a whole saga—lots of mashed potatoes and yogurt for about three days. She milked the “I can’t chew” excuse for all it was worth...
Extractions knocked me out way more than my implant did, too. The swelling and that “throbbing” feeling after losing a few teeth at once was rough—ice packs helped, but I felt kind of miserable for a couple days. Implant was more of a dull annoyance than real pain. Seems like the eating part is always awkward either way—can’t win.
