Braces for buck teeth vs deep bite: did you know there’s a difference?

Here’s something I didn’t realize until my ortho pointed it out—overjet (like, teeth sticking out) and overbite (top teeth covering too much of the lowers) aren’t the same thing, and apparently they need different brace setups. I always thought braces were just…braces, but nope. Has anyone had to fix both at once? Curious how that worked out or if it took longer.

Yep, there’s definitely a difference—and it surprises a lot of people! Treating both overjet and deep bite together can be a bit more complex, but it’s really common. Usually, it just means your ortho has to plan things out in stages, sometimes using elastics or springs. It might take a little longer than just fixing one issue, but I’ve seen plenty of folks finish up with great results. Hang in there—it’s totally doable.

Yeah, it really does take some patience when you’re dealing with both. I had a pretty noticeable overjet and a deep bite too—my ortho warned me upfront it’d be a bit of a journey. The elastics were honestly annoying at first, but I got used to them. Totally worth it in the end, though. My bite feels so much better now. Hang in there, you’ll get through it!

Ugh, I’m right there with you on the elastics. My ortho handed me that little bag like it was a party favor, but honestly, I was convinced I’d never get the hang of them. The first week, I kept snapping myself in the lip—felt like a human slingshot. But after a while, it just became part of the routine, like brushing my teeth or complaining about soup getting stuck in my brackets. I still get anxious about whether my bite’s “fixing” fast enough, but reading your story helps. I guess patience is the name of the game... even if it’s not my best skill.

Elastics really are a rite of passage, aren’t they? I found them awkward too, but once I got past the learning curve, things improved. Interesting how different bite issues call for totally different mechanics—my ortho explained that even wire shapes can change depending on what’s being corrected. Progress always feels slow, but those tiny adjustments do add up over time.
