Braces for underbite taking forever and a day

You're definitely lucky! Teeth shifting really does vary a ton depending on bite, jaw alignment, and even habits like grinding or clenching. Orthodontists err on the side of caution because we see enough cases where skipping retainers leads to noticeable relapse...but hey, glad you're one of the fortunate ones.

Yeah, I totally get why orthodontists stress retainers. When I finally got my braces off after nearly three years (felt like forever and a day, too), I was so thrilled to be done with all the tightening appointments and rubber bands. But then came the retainer talkβ€”my ortho insisted I wear mine religiously, and honestly, I thought it was just an upsell at first. Being budget-conscious, I wondered if it was really necessary or just another expense.

Fast forward a few months, I got lazy and skipped wearing mine for about two weeks while traveling. Big mistake. My teeth shifted noticeably, and I panicked thinking I'd wasted all that time and money. Luckily, going back to nightly wear corrected it pretty quickly, but lesson learned: retainers aren't just hype. Teeth shifting really is unpredictable...guess I'm not one of the fortunate ones who can skip them without consequences.

Yeah, it's definitely unpredictable. Even minor shifts can cause bite issues or uneven wear over time. Curious if anyone noticed changes in their bite alignment after a short lapse in retainer use...?

Yeah, totally relate to this. I skipped my retainer for just a week once during vacation, and my bite felt noticeably off afterward. It wasn't drastic, but chewing felt weirdly uneven for a while. Thankfully, wearing the retainer consistently again helped things settle back down. Teeth really do have a mind of their own sometimes...guess it's just one of those things we have to stay on top of.

Ugh, seriously, teeth are weirdly stubborn. Did your orthodontist mention if skipping retainers for just a week can actually cause permanent shifts, or is it more temporary discomfort? I'm asking because I've got braces for an underbite right now and feel like progress is sooo slow. Wondering if I'll be stuck in retainers forever once they're finally off...not exactly the lifelong accessory I had in mind, lol.
