Honestly, skipping retainers for just a week probably won't cause permanent shifts, but it can definitely lead to noticeable discomfort and temporary shifting. I've had mine off for a couple years, and anytime I slack off on wearing my retainers—even just for a weekend—my teeth feel tight and uncomfortable when I put them back in. Progress with braces always feels painfully slow, but it really does pay off eventually. Did your ortho mention if you'll need a permanent retainer after braces? Mine did, and it's actually been pretty low maintenance...

I've had my braces off for ages now and still stress over skipping retainers. Even one night makes mine super tight and achy... Did your ortho say anything about how long you'll need the permanent retainer? Mine never gave me a clear timeline.

Mine didn't give me a clear timeline either, just said "as long as possible," which is pretty vague, lol. Honestly, I still get that achy feeling too if I skip even one night...guess it's just part of the deal. Hang in there, you're definitely not alone!

Yeah, the "as long as possible" line always makes me a bit uneasy too... I get why they say it, but still, a rough timeline would help ease the anxiety. When I had braces for my underbite, I remember skipping elastics just once or twice and feeling that dull ache creep back in—definitely not fun. Honestly, consistency is key, even if it's a pain. Hang in there, it'll pay off eventually.

Couldn't agree more with this. I remember when I had braces for my underbite—felt like an eternity and a half! My orthodontist also gave me the vague "as long as necessary" line, which wasn't exactly reassuring. But looking back, I realize they probably avoid specifics because everyone's teeth move at their own pace.

I do recall those elastics being particularly annoying, though. Missed wearing them once during a weekend trip and boy, did my jaw remind me about it afterward... definitely learned my lesson. It really is about sticking to the routine, even if it's tedious.

Keep your chin up (pun somewhat intended), you'll get there eventually. And trust me, the day they finally come off will feel amazing—worth every single elastic band struggle.
