Getting my bite fixed with metal in my mouth—worth it?

Heat packs definitely help some people, but I actually had a different experience. My ortho pushed ice packs over heat for the first week or so, especially when my jaw felt inflamed or super sore. The cold seemed to numb things and kept swelling down, which helped me more than warmth did. I think it depends on whether your jaw pain feels more like aching muscles or actual inflammation. For me, heat sometimes made things throb more. Funny how everyone’s body reacts a bit differently...

That’s interesting, because my kid’s ortho was all about the ice too, especially right after adjustments. We tried heat once and it honestly seemed to make things worse, like you said—more throbbing than relief. Seems like it really is trial and error with this stuff.

Ice is definitely the MVP after an adjustment—less swelling, less whining (from kids and adults, let’s be honest). Heat can feel good for sore muscles but for braces pain? Usually just cranks up the pulsing. Ever try a popsicle as a “medical device”? Works wonders... plus you get a treat out of it. Did your kid ever complain about the metal cutting into their cheeks too, or was it just the soreness?

Those metal brackets can really do a number on the inside of your cheeks, can’t they? I remember my first few weeks with braces, I was constantly reaching for that little tub of wax. Did you ever try that for your kid—or for yourself if you’ve had braces? It’s not perfect, but it made a difference for me, especially overnight when I’d wake up with a sore spot.

Popsicles as pain relief—now that’s something I wish I’d thought of sooner. I always went for ice water, but the treat factor would’ve made the whole thing more bearable. Did you find certain flavors worked better, or was it just whatever was in the freezer?

I do wonder if it’s just a matter of getting used to the hardware. Took me a good month before my cheeks stopped feeling like they’d been through a cheese grater. Is your kid still struggling with that, or has it eased up?

Yeah, that wax was a lifesaver for us too, especially on the budget side—one little tub lasted ages if we rationed it. My kid went through a popsicle phase after every adjustment, but honestly, I just grabbed whatever was cheapest at the store. Grape seemed to be the favorite, though. Took about three weeks before things calmed down with the cheek pain. Did you notice any tricks for making meals less of a hassle during that first month? We tried mashed potatoes and eggs but got bored pretty fast...
