How do you chill out after an adjustment?

After my last adjustment (braces, in my case), I was honestly miserable for a couple days—ice cream helped, but I’m curious what everyone else does. Do you go straight to OTC painkillers, or try to tough it out with softer foods and Netflix? Maybe you swear by some weird home remedy? Quick poll: what’s your go-to for dealing with the soreness?

Honestly, I’m kind of dreading my first adjustment after reading stuff like this. The idea of being stuck with that soreness for days just freaks me out. I keep telling myself it’ll be worth it, but yeah—I’d probably reach for painkillers right away. Maybe that’s just me being a wimp, but I don’t see the point in suffering if there’s an easier way? Ice cream sounds nice, but I wonder if it really helps or just distracts you for a bit. Anyway, it’s reassuring to know I’m not the only one anxious about this whole process.

I totally get where you’re coming from—my first adjustment was way more uncomfortable than I expected, but honestly, it wasn’t unbearable. I did end up taking some ibuprofen, mostly just to take the edge off so I could eat something besides soup. The ice cream thing... I don’t know if it actually helps with pain or just makes you feel better for a few minutes, but hey, I’ll take any excuse for dessert.

One thing I’m curious about: does anyone else find that the soreness actually gets worse the second day, not right after the appointment? That always throws me off—like I think I’m in the clear and then bam, can’t chew by lunchtime the next day. Do people usually just ride it out, or is there some trick for dealing with that delayed ache?

That delayed soreness is real—like my teeth are plotting against me overnight. I’ve tried warm salt water rinses and soft foods, but nothing totally fixes it. Has anyone experimented with switching up painkillers or timing them differently? Sometimes I wonder if that makes a difference or if it’s just wishful thinking.

That second-day soreness is the worst for me, too. I always think I’m in the clear after the first night, then bam—everything hurts when I wake up. I’ve found alternating Tylenol and ibuprofen (with food) helps a bit more than just sticking with one, but I still rely on soft noodles and mashed potatoes to get by. Warm salt water rinses take the edge off, but mostly it’s just waiting it out. Sometimes I wonder if it’d be easier if I just scheduled adjustments before a weekend so I could lay low.
