I totally get what you mean about the anxiety over stretching out appointments. I’m pretty new to all this, but I already feel like the regular 4-6 week schedule is kind of a safety net. My ortho explained that the intervals are meant to let your teeth move at a steady pace without putting too much stress on the roots or gums. Apparently, if you go too long, your teeth can “stall” in their movement, or sometimes even start to move back a bit, which is wild to think about.
That said, I’ve read stories from people who had to wait longer between visits—like if their ortho was on vacation or something—and most of them were fine. But there are a few who said their wires got loose or brackets broke and they didn’t realize it until their next appointment. That’s what freaks me out: not noticing something’s off until it’s too late. I guess I’m a bit of a worrier about these things.
Last month, I had to push my appointment back by almost a week because of work stuff, and honestly, nothing catastrophic happened. My teeth did feel kind of achy, but I think that was just because they tightened everything up again after the gap. It was uncomfortable for a couple days, but nothing unbearable.
I do wonder if some of it is psychological, though. Like, knowing you’re on track just makes you feel better about the whole process. The technical side is interesting—my ortho mentioned that bone remodeling takes a certain amount of time, so if you adjust too soon or too late, it can actually slow down progress. But everyone’s biology is different.
It’s reassuring hearing that others have gone through similar stuff and survived—makes me feel less paranoid if I ever have to reschedule again. Still, I’d rather stick to the normal schedule when I can... just feels safer that way, even if it’s mostly in my head.
