I've noticed something similar, actually. I've had braces for about 8 months now, and each adjustment seems to have its own personality—some barely noticeable, others pretty uncomfortable. One thing I've found helpful (and budget-friendly) is rinsing with warm salt water after adjustments; it seems to ease the soreness a bit. Smoothies are great too, but honestly, mashed potatoes have been my lifesaver on tougher days...cheap, filling, and easy on sore teeth.
I've only had my braces for about a month, and honestly, every adjustment makes me pretty anxious. Salt water didn't really help me much, but I swear by cold yogurt—it's soothing and distracts me from the soreness. Mashed potatoes sound good though...might try that next time.
