Pizza crust, yep, that’s another sneaky one… I swear, the stuff you *think* is safe always turns out to be the culprit. I’ve noticed after a tightening, even bread can feel like chewing rocks. Have you ever had pain shoot up into your jaw or ear? Sometimes I can’t tell if it’s normal or if I’m just overthinking every twinge.

That sharp pain shooting into your jaw or ear after a tightening isn’t uncommon, but I’m curious—does it last just a few seconds or linger for hours? Sometimes nerves in the area can get a bit irritated, especially if there’s extra pressure on certain teeth. Have you noticed if it gets worse when you chew or bite down, or is it just random? Honestly, bread is one of those foods that surprises people... it’s way tougher than it looks when your teeth are sore.

That pain shooting into your jaw or ear is exactly what freaked me out after my last tightening. I kept thinking something was wrong because it wasn’t just sore teeth—it was like this weird zing that would come and go, and sometimes it felt like it lasted forever. Chewing definitely made it worse for me, especially with anything even remotely chewy (bread, bagels... forget it). I remember being so surprised at how much effort it took to eat a sandwich.

Honestly, I worried a lot about whether the pain was normal or if I’d somehow messed up my teeth. My orthodontist told me it’s pretty common for the nerves to get a bit irritated, especially when they’re moving teeth that haven’t budged in years. It’s super uncomfortable but usually settles down after a couple days for me—though I do still get anxious every time.

Hang in there. It’s rough, but you’re definitely not alone in this. Sometimes just knowing other people have had the same weird pains makes it a bit easier to deal with.

Man, I totally relate to that “zing” pain—mine was like a random electric jolt that’d hit out of nowhere, usually when I was trying to eat something that wasn’t just soup or yogurt. I swear, after my last tightening, even biting into a banana felt like a risk. The jaw and ear thing freaked me out too, especially since I’m always thinking, “Great, did I just add another bill to my dental tab?”

I actually called my ortho’s office once because I was convinced something got messed up (my wallet was already sweating). They told me it’s all part of the process, but honestly, that’s easy for them to say when they’re not the ones skipping pizza night. Did you end up having to buy a bunch of soft foods? I started budgeting for mashed potatoes and applesauce because I couldn’t handle the idea of wasting money on food I literally couldn’t chew.

I’m curious if anyone here has found something cheap and filling that doesn’t require actual chewing? I tried instant noodles but… not the healthiest, and I got tired of them fast. Also, does anyone else get that weird ache in their ears when it’s cold out? Sometimes I can’t tell if it’s the braces or just my luck.

Anyway, I feel you—every time I get used to the pain, it’s time for another appointment. At least it’s temporary, right? That’s what I keep telling myself while staring longingly at crunchy snacks.

My kiddo’s been on the mashed potatoes and yogurt train for months now. We got creative with scrambled eggs and even tried blending chicken soup—didn’t look great, but it worked. The ear pain in winter? Yeah, that happens here too. I started packing a scarf for her and it actually helped a bit. Honestly, the things you do for braces…
