Does grouping a sweet or starchy snack with a meal reduce cavity risk compared with eating the same food in several rounds between meals? I’m trying to understand whether the number of times teeth encounter fermentable carbohydrates matters independently of the total amount eaten, since grazing could mean more separate acid-producing episodes.

Would sticky foods or sipping a sugary drink over time change that comparison? I’m curious what practical eating pattern dentists generally recommend, without assuming that keeping snacks to mealtimes makes total sugar intake irrelevant.

I’m trying to work out how much my beverage timing matters for cavity prevention. If the total amount is the same, is slowly sipping coffee, soda, juice, or flavored water between meals harder on teeth than drinking it during a meal?

I’m especially unsure about the difference between:

- Sugary drinks, where both sugar and acidity may be involved
- Sugar-free soda or flavored water, which may still be acidic
- Coffee, depending on whether it’s sweetened and how long it’s sipped

Would finishing a drink in one sitting with a meal reduce the number of acid attacks compared with carrying it around and taking small sips for hours? I’m not looking for a loophole to drink more, just trying to change the habit that matters most.

For context, I brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, but I’m wondering whether rinsing with plain water after drinks helps, especially when I’m between meals. I know brushing immediately after an acidic drink may not be ideal, so how long do people usually wait? Do fluoride rinses or sugar-free alternatives make a meaningful difference, or is the main fix simply limiting how often teeth are exposed to acid?

The poor kid has 8 cavities, 2 of which needs root canals. We don't have insurance right now so I'll be paying out of pocket for all this work. Any recommendations on how to encourage better oral care with him? He's had probably 6-8 fillings in the past but nothing like this.

I finally worked up the courage to visit the dentist after 8 years away. I've been having pretty severe pain in some of my molars so I figured I probably had a couple cavities. This is new for me because I had never had cavities before. Turns out I do have cavities - 13 of them - some of which my dentist so graciously classified as "massive". I guess I want to know how much I've messed up. I'm 25 and at least 6 of the molars need root canals because the cavities are so bad. The rest still need pretty significant amounts of decay drilled out. How bad is this? What can I do to protect my teeth in the future? Will the work hurt?

No matter how much I brush, I feel like food gets stuck everywhere (especially after popcorn… big mistake). Flossing is a nightmare too - those little threaders are so fiddly.
I started using a fluoride mouth rinse a few weeks ago because my dentist said it might help with some sensitivity I’ve been having. Thing is, I’m not totally sure how often I should be using it. The bottle says daily, but honestly, I forget sometimes and then I’ll use it two days in a row or skip a couple days. Is that bad? Also, is there such a thing as using it too much? Like, could you overdo it and mess up your teeth or something?

I feel like my teeth are a bit less sensitive now, but maybe that’s just me wanting to believe it’s working. Has anyone else gotten actual results from using fluoride rinse regularly? Do you stick to every single day or just whenever you remember?
