Interdental brushes are basically tiny medieval torture devices the first week, at least in my hands. I kept thinking I was either missing half the gunk or about to stab straight through my gums.

This is exactly how I felt! The first time I tried those little brushes, I swear I spent more time fishing them out from the bottom of the sink than actually cleaning between my teeth. And don’t even get me started on the price—why are the tiniest brushes in the world so expensive? For something that looks like it belongs in a hamster’s grooming kit, they sure know how to charge.

Honestly, I tried to cheap out and get some off-brand ones at the dollar store. Not my brightest move. The bristles basically turned into limp noodles after one use and then got stuck between my brackets. Had to pull out tweezers. My partner just shook their head and told me to “invest in my dental future,” but my wallet is still in denial.

I will say, after a few weeks of poking and prodding (and yes, a little blood), it did get easier. I figured out that if I don’t try to jam the brush in like I’m unlocking a treasure chest, it’s way less painful. But you’re right—those first few days are rough. My gums felt like I’d been flossing with barbed wire.

Also, tissues are a must. Or in my case, I just learned to brush over the sink and hope for the best. I’ve gotten better at it, but sometimes I still flinch when I see that little brush coming toward my mouth.

On the bright side, my dentist said my “in-between” cleaning has paid off—no new cavities since I started using them. Still not convinced they’re worth their weight in gold, but hey, cheaper than fillings... probably.

Totally get where you’re coming from. I remember thinking those brushes were just another way for my gums to bleed for no reason. The sticker shock is real, too—I keep waiting for them to go on sale, but nope, never happens. But honestly, after sticking with it for a while, my gums stopped freaking out and my breath improved, which was a nice bonus. Still not my favorite part of the routine, but it beats getting another filling.

Those little brushes took some getting used to for me, too. I used to think they were just another thing to buy, and my gums definitely weren’t happy at first. But after a few weeks, the bleeding pretty much stopped and my hygienist actually noticed less plaque. I still grumble about the price, but honestly, it’s cheaper than another round of fillings down the road. It’s not glamorous, but it does seem to make a difference for those sneaky spots between teeth.

Honestly, I relate way too much to this. When my orthodontist first handed me a pack of those tiny brushes, I thought they were just trying to upsell me on something unnecessary. But then I started getting those “watch” spots between my molars—nothing major yet, but enough to stress me out every time I saw the X-rays.

The first week using those brushes was seriously rough. My gums bled like crazy and I kept worrying I was doing something wrong or making it worse. It almost made me want to just stick with floss and hope for the best. But after a while, things did calm down and my gums stopped freaking out so much. My hygienist even said she could tell I’d been working harder in those tricky spots.

Still, I’m always worried about missing something back there, especially with all the wires and brackets in the way (braces are a whole other headache). Does anyone else feel like you’re never really sure you’re doing enough? Or is that just my anxiety talking? Sometimes I’ll go over the same spot three times just to be safe... probably overkill, but after dealing with one cavity between two teeth last year, I’m kind of paranoid now.

Has anyone actually managed to avoid new cavities completely since starting with these brushes? Or do you still get them sometimes even when you’re super careful? Just curious if it’s possible or if some of us are just more prone no matter what we do.

I hear you on the paranoia—after a couple of those “watch” spots myself, I’m basically a detective with those little brushes. Honestly, I’ve been using them for a few years now and, knock on wood, haven’t had a new cavity in ages. Still, I don’t think anyone ever feels 100% sure they’re getting every spot, especially with braces or tight teeth. Sometimes it feels like a losing battle, but my hygienist always says the effort really does show. And hey, if it means fewer drills in my future, I’ll keep at it—even if my wallet grumbles a bit.
