the “no rinsing” thing is still a mystery to me—like, am I supposed to just let the toothpaste marinate in there?

I still remember the first time a colleague told me about the “spit, don’t rinse” trick. I thought he was joking. The idea of leaving that film in my mouth felt so wrong at first. But after a few weeks, I got used to it, especially after switching to a milder toothpaste. I totally get the nausea thing with the strong mint flavors—sometimes I’d gag just thinking about it. Funny how something as basic as brushing can get so complicated. Dental drama from childhood is real... I still get flashbacks of that bubblegum polish at the dentist’s office.

That “spit, don’t rinse” thing tripped me up too. I kept thinking, if I leave all that foam in my mouth, am I just walking around with a toothpaste smoothie on my teeth? It’s weird how your brain fights it at first. I switched to one of those toothpastes for sensitive teeth—less burn, but still feels like I’m breaking some unspoken hygiene law by not rinsing.

I’m still not sure how much of a difference it makes with actual decay, though. Like, if you’ve got a bunch of cavities already, does leaving the toothpaste film really help reverse anything, or is it just about not making things worse? I’ve heard people say fluoride can “remineralize” spots, but I don’t know if that’s wishful thinking or legit science.

Also, anyone else get that gritty feeling on your teeth after not rinsing? Sometimes I wonder if that’s normal or if I’m just using way too much toothpaste...

I used to rinse like crazy because it felt wrong not to, but my dentist actually said the “spit, don’t rinse” thing really does help the fluoride stick around and do its job.

Man, this was such a weird habit to break for me. I always thought rinsing was the “clean” thing to do, but now I just kinda stand there, fighting the urge, mouth feeling all minty and gritty. It’s wild how much of dental care is just unlearning stuff I grew up doing. Pea-sized blob is a good tip—I used to glob it on like I was icing a cupcake.

Totally get you on the weirdness of not rinsing. I still catch myself reaching for the cup sometimes. That minty aftertaste is just... persistent, but I’ve noticed my teeth actually feel less sensitive since making the switch. It’s wild how much childhood “common sense” turns out to be more habit than science. And yeah, the pea-sized thing blew my mind too—my toothpaste tubes last forever now. Hang in there, it gets less awkward over time.

That minty aftertaste really does linger, doesn’t it? I still find myself standing at the sink debating if I should rinse or not, even though I know leaving the toothpaste on is better for my enamel. Funny how those habits from when we were kids just stick. My orthodontist actually encouraged me to stop rinsing, and I swear my teeth have been less sensitive since. The pea-sized amount thing still feels weird though—I used to glob it on like frosting. Old habits die hard, I guess...
