I get what you mean about letting some things go, but I gotta admit, I’m not great at ignoring stuff stuck in my teeth. Drives me nuts. Maybe it’s just habit after years of dental work, but if I feel something wedged in there, I’ll go at it with whatever’s handy—floss, toothpick, even a folded-up napkin if I’m out and about. I’ve tried the little mirror trick, but honestly, my eyesight isn’t what it used to be, so half the time I end up guessing anyway.

I do think it’s easy for folks to say “little wins count,” but when you’re dealing with older gums or crowns, missing a spot can turn into a real headache down the line. I’d rather fuss a bit now than deal with another crown later. Maybe it’s just me being stubborn, but I figure a few extra minutes is worth it... even if it means looking a bit silly in public now and then.

I totally get where you’re coming from—stuff stuck in my teeth makes me super anxious, especially now that I’ve got braces. I keep worrying I’m missing something and it’ll turn into a bigger problem, like you said. Do you ever feel like you’re brushing forever but still not sure if it’s clean? I’ve tried those little interdental brushes, but half the time I feel like I’m poking my gums more than cleaning anything. I haven’t really gotten the hang of flossing with braces yet either.

Do you think using a water flosser actually helps, or is it just hype? I’m kind of tempted to get one, but they’re not exactly cheap. My dentist mentioned them, but honestly, I don’t want to spend a ton if it won’t really make a difference. Also, do you just carry floss picks around for emergencies? I’m always paranoid about eating out and not realizing there’s spinach or something stuck right in front.

It’s weird how much more self-conscious I am about this now. Does it ever get easier to ignore, or is it just part of having dental work?

Braces really do make you hyper-aware of every tiny thing stuck in your teeth, right? I used to just brush and go, but now I’m checking the mirror constantly, especially after meals. I totally get what you mean about interdental brushes—sometimes I feel like I’m fencing with my gums rather than actually cleaning anything. It’s tricky figuring out the right angle, and half the time I worry I’m making things worse.

About water flossers—I was pretty skeptical too. My ortho recommended one and honestly, it felt like a splurge at first. But after a couple of weeks using it, especially after eating stuff like popcorn or seeds, it made a noticeable difference for me. I still use regular floss (with those annoying threaders), but the water flosser seems to flush out bits that even brushing misses. The only downside is they’re not exactly portable, so for emergencies when I’m out, I keep a little pack of floss picks in my bag. Not perfect, but better than nothing when you’re at a restaurant and paranoid there’s lettuce waving at everyone.

The self-consciousness part is real, though. For the first few months with braces, it felt like everyone could see every crumb stuck in my brackets. Over time, it’s gotten a bit easier to relax—even if something’s there for a bit, most people don’t actually notice unless you point it out. Still bugs me sometimes though.

Has anyone else found a good way to discreetly check their teeth when they’re out? Tiny mirrors help but feel kind of obvious...

Honestly, I’ve become a pro at the “pretend phone selfie” method—just flip the camera on and casually “check a text” while sneakily zooming in on my teeth. Not flawless, but less obvious than whipping out a mini mirror in the middle of lunch. Also, shoutout to those little floss picks—life savers, even if you do look like you’re sword-fighting with your mouth for a second. The paranoia about food stuck in there is real, but I swear most people are too busy with their own stuff to notice unless you’re flashing them a full-on spinach grin.

That paranoia is honestly such a common feeling. I see so many people get anxious about it, especially with braces—there’s just more places for things to hide. The phone camera trick is clever, though I do worry sometimes about hygiene if you’re using your fingers to adjust brackets or wires in public. I’m always a bit overcautious about transferring bacteria from surfaces to my mouth, especially after touching my phone... maybe that’s just me overthinking.

Curious if anyone here actually uses those little dental travel kits? I know they can feel bulky, but I’ve had a few patients swear by keeping a tiny bottle of mouthwash and some orthodontic wax handy. It’s not the most discreet, but sometimes peace of mind wins over subtlety. Has anyone found those useful or just too much hassle to carry around?
