Couldn’t agree more about finding that balance. I’ve seen plenty of people go overboard after getting crowns or implants—scrubbing too hard, using every rinse and gadget out there, and then ending up with irritated gums or even receding tissue. Sometimes it feels like folks think more is always better, but that’s not always the case.

On the flip side, I’ve also met people who basically avoid cleaning around bridges because they’re worried about damaging something, and then they run into issues with plaque or bad breath. Personally, I found those little interdental brushes pretty helpful after my bridge work, but I had to try a few sizes before landing on one that didn’t feel like it was shredding my gums.

Curious if anyone’s dentist ever recommended scaling back on their routine? I’ve heard a few colleagues mention that over-cleaning can sometimes do more harm than good, especially with sensitive tissue after procedures. Wondering how common that is or if it’s just a matter of personal sensitivity...

That’s actually something my dentist mentioned after I got my first crown—she told me not to go overboard with all the rinses and fancy gadgets. I used to brush like I was scrubbing a pan, and my gums definitely paid for it. Took a while to figure out that gentle really is better, especially right after dental work. I totally get being nervous about messing things up, but sometimes less is more. It’s a weird balance, isn’t it?

This made me laugh, because I’m totally guilty of the same thing. When I got my first filling last month, I was so paranoid about messing it up that I started brushing way harder than usual and using mouthwash after every meal. Ended up with sore gums and this weird burning feeling. Not fun.

It’s kind of wild how we’re told to keep everything super clean, but then you realize there’s such a thing as too much. My dentist actually told me to just stick to gentle brushing twice a day and lay off the fancy rinses for a bit while things healed. Honestly, it felt wrong at first—like I was slacking off—but my mouth calmed down pretty quick.

Still get anxious about missing a spot or something getting infected, but I guess sometimes being gentle really is better? Feels weird not going overboard, but my teeth seem happier for it.
