Imagine if you just couldn't use regular floss with braces—like, it just vanished from the planet for a year. What would you all do? Water flossers, those little interdental brushes, mouthwash...or something else I'm missing? I've tried the floss threaders and they make me want to throw my whole bathroom in the trash. Curious if anyone's found a hack that actually feels doable, or if it's just a struggle for everyone.

I totally get the frustration with floss threaders—they’re so fiddly, I gave up after a week. Water flossers have been a lifesaver for me. They’re a bit messy at first, but honestly, my gums have never felt better. I also use those tiny interdental brushes for spots the water flosser misses. Has anyone noticed if mouthwash alone actually makes a difference with braces, or is it just wishful thinking?

I’ve wondered about this too. I used to think swishing with mouthwash would be enough when I was too tired to deal with flossing and all that. Honestly, it feels refreshing, but I can’t say my teeth ever felt as clean as when I actually did the physical cleaning—like with the water flosser or those tiny brushes. For me, mouthwash is more of a backup plan than a real solution.

When I first got braces, my orthodontist made it sound like mouthwash would help a lot, but after a few months, I started noticing gunk stuck around the brackets even though I was using it every night. It’s almost like the mouthwash helps with breath and maybe kills some germs, but it doesn’t really get rid of food bits or plaque in the tricky spots.

I totally relate to what you said about floss threaders being fiddly. I tried for a while but just got annoyed and gave up. Water flosser was a game-changer for me too—though I still manage to spray water all over the mirror half the time. Those little interdental brushes are great for getting in between wires where the water flosser misses (especially near the back molars).

I guess if you’re in a rush or just can’t face all the tools some nights, mouthwash is better than nothing... but I wouldn’t rely on it alone. My gums definitely feel healthier when I use the water flosser regularly versus just rinsing. Maybe it’s different for other people, but that’s been my experience so far.

Anyone else notice their teeth feel kind of “fuzzy” if they skip a night of proper cleaning? That’s usually my sign that mouthwash didn’t cut it on its own.

- Totally agree that mouthwash alone just isn’t enough with braces.
- Physical cleaning (brushing, water flosser, or interdental brushes) is key because mouthwash can’t dislodge food or plaque stuck around brackets.
- I’ve tried skipping the full routine and yeah, my teeth definitely felt “fuzzy” after. That’s always my reminder.
- Mouthwash feels nice, but it’s more of a supplement.
- For what it’s worth, I’ve found using a water flosser at a lower pressure helps with the mess... though I still manage to get splashes everywhere some days.
- If flossing isn’t an option, combining water flosser and those little brushes seems to be the next best thing.

Water flossers are kind of a game changer, but I get what you mean about the mess—my mirror gets a daily shower. For me, those tiny interdental brushes (like TePe or GUM) work best for the gunk that wedges right by the brackets. I usually keep one in my bag for after lunch. It’s not as thorough as regular floss, but honestly, it’s way less frustrating than threaders. Some days I just do my best and call it good enough... teeth with braces are a whole different beast.
