The great dental quest: searching for planet-friendly floss

Ended up back with regular floss after a stern talk from my hygienist.

I hear you—my kid’s dentist was pretty blunt about it too. I keep worrying about all the plastic, but then I get anxious about cavities if we switch to something that just doesn’t work as well. Has anyone found an option that actually cleans well and doesn’t make your gums bleed? Or is it really just a choice between waste or dental drama?

I’m right there with you. I tried switching to some of those “eco” silk flosses, but my kid’s teeth are super tight and it just shredded or got stuck—cue the panicked call to the dentist. Regular floss gets the job done, but yeah, the plastic guilt is real. I wish someone would invent a compostable floss that actually holds up... Until then, I guess it’s picking my battles between cavities and trash.

Ugh, I totally get it—tried that fancy silk stuff and it basically turned into dental confetti in my mouth. Ended up digging out shreds for like 10 minutes... not my finest moment. I keep hoping someone will hack this with some cool new material. For now, it’s the regular plastic stuff for me, even though it bugs me every time I toss it.

I’m kinda surprised by how many people have the same “shredded silk floss” horror story. I tried it too, and yeah, it was like flossing with a spiderweb that just gave up halfway through. But honestly, I’m not sure plastic floss is really the only other option. Has anyone actually stuck with those newer corn-based compostable ones? I grabbed a pack out of curiosity, and they were... weirdly sturdy? Not gonna say they’re perfect (they squeak a bit and taste faintly like cardboard), but at least they didn’t turn into mouth confetti.

I get the guilt about tossing plastic, but sometimes I wonder if we’re just trading one annoyance for another. Is there really a planet-friendly floss that doesn’t make you want to rage-floss your entire bathroom? Or is this just one of those “choose your battle” things?

Honestly, that’s my main issue with these “eco” flosses. I tried the corn-based ones and, yeah, they’re sturdy-ish, but the weird texture and that squeak just made me want to skip flossing altogether. I’ve also noticed some of them fray if you’ve got tight teeth. Am I missing something, or is there really no middle ground where it’s both effective and not landfill fodder? I keep going back to the regular stuff out of frustration… feels like a lose-lose.
