Not painful, just kinda distracting.

Totally get what you mean about the “empty” feeling. After my first implant, I kept poking at that spot with my tongue, half-expecting something to be there. The numbness and tingling faded after a few days for me, but that exposed gum sensation lingered. It’s weird how your mouth just feels off-balance for a bit. Hang in there—once things settle, it starts to feel normal again.

Yeah, I remember that odd “hollow” sensation really well—almost like the balance of my bite was off for a while. For me, the weirdest part was how sensitive the gum felt to temperature changes, even just drinking water. Took about a week for things to mellow out. It’s interesting how your mouth adapts, but those first few days are definitely distracting. I wouldn’t call it pain either, just... strange.

That’s exactly how my kid described it after his implant stitches came out—he kept saying it felt “empty” or like something was missing when he bit down. He also complained about cold water feeling almost sharp, which surprised me since his pain tolerance is usually pretty high. It took him maybe five or six days before eating and drinking felt normal again. I guess kids bounce back fast, but those first couple of afternoons, he was super cautious. It’s wild how your mouth can feel so off-kilter from such a small change.

I remember that weird “empty” sensation after my own implant stitches came out. It’s honestly hard to describe unless you’ve felt it—almost like your tongue keeps checking a spot that’s not quite right. I had a similar issue with sensitivity, especially with cold drinks. For me, it was like an icy jolt, even though the area didn’t look irritated or swollen anymore. It faded after about a week, but I kept second-guessing if that was normal.

Did your dentist say anything about the sharp cold feeling? Mine told me it’s pretty common as the gum heals and nerves settle down, but I always wonder if it’s really “normal” or just something they say to keep you from worrying. I actually called back to double check because I thought maybe a bit of root or something was exposed. They said as long as there wasn’t throbbing pain or bleeding, it would resolve itself.

I get what you mean about being cautious. I stuck to soft foods way longer than I probably needed to, just because I didn’t trust that area yet. Did your kid have any trouble with brushing near the implant site? I was paranoid about pulling at the gum too much, so I barely touched it for a few days. Looking back, maybe I was overthinking it, but it’s hard not to when your mouth feels off.

I’m curious if anyone else’s dentist recommended saltwater rinses post-stitches? Mine did, but I couldn’t tell if it actually helped or if it was just for peace of mind. Maybe it’s just one of those things you have to ride out.

That “empty” feeling is so weird, right? I had the same thing and honestly thought something was missing or not healing right. My dentist brushed off the cold sensitivity too, but I’m still not totally convinced it’s always “normal.” I actually pushed for an x-ray just to be sure nothing was exposed—turns out it really was just nerves settling down, but I’d rather double-check than just trust the “it’ll go away” answer. Also, I did saltwater rinses but never noticed a huge difference... sometimes I think dentists recommend them just because they can’t hurt.
