Cloudy buildup on a night guard feels rough

What’s a safe way to deal with cloudy or rough mineral-looking deposits on a night guard without damaging it? I’d first want to know whether the residue is a soft film or hardened scale, and what the guard is made of. Do cleaning or soaking recommendations differ for common guard materials, and are there cleaners that should be avoided?

If brushing or a material-safe soak doesn’t shift hardened buildup, or the guard’s fit has changed, would that be a reason to ask a dentist about cleaning or replacement? I wouldn’t assume deposits alone mean the guard needs replacing.

Cleaning advice does depend on the guard material. Bleach and hot water can damage or distort some guards, while abrasive toothpaste may scratch the surface and leave more texture for buildup to cling to. It’s safest to check the manufacturer’s instructions for that specific guard before soaking it or using a cleaner.
