How Long Does Your Mouthguard Usually Last?

Two years is definitely a good run, especially with heavy grinding. I've seen patients who grind through cheaper guards in just a few months, so you're not alone there. Custom-fit guards really do make a huge difference—it's not just marketing hype. They distribute the pressure evenly, which helps them last longer and protects your teeth better overall.

One thing I'd add is that lifespan can also depend on how well you maintain it. Regular cleaning with mild soap or denture cleaner (not toothpaste!) and storing it properly in a ventilated case can extend its life quite a bit. Also, bringing it along to your regular dental check-ups is helpful—your dentist can spot early signs of wear or damage before they become bigger issues.

But yeah, two to three years is pretty typical for custom guards if you're taking good care of them. Sounds like you're doing everything right so far... keep it up!

Totally agree on this! I learned the hard way about toothpaste... it made my first custom guard brittle way faster than expected. Now I just stick to mild soap and water, and my second one's going strong at almost three years. Honestly, it's surprising how much difference proper care makes. Glad to hear two years is normal though—thought I was chewing through them too fast, haha.

Interesting points here, but honestly, even with careful cleaning and storage, we've never gotten more than about 18 months out of ours. My kiddo tends to grind pretty aggressively at night, so maybe that's part of it? I did try the mild soap method after reading about it here, and while it definitely kept things cleaner, it didn't seem to extend the lifespan significantly for us.

Haha, I wish we could hit that two-year mark! Our dentist mentioned that some people naturally wear through guards faster due to bite alignment or grinding intensity. So, if you're consistently getting three years, that's pretty impressive. Maybe we're just unlucky... or my kid's secretly part shark.

Haha, I feel your pain—we've never even gotten close to two years either. My daughter grinds like she's trying to file down diamonds or something. Our dentist said the same thing about bite alignment and grinding intensity, so I guess some kids just have jaws of steel? We tried the soap method too, and while it definitely helped with freshness, durability-wise...no luck.

Honestly, at this point, I'm leaning toward shark.

Haha, shark genes might explain a lot! Have you noticed if stress or certain activities make her grinding worse? My son used to shred through mouthguards too, especially during exam weeks or soccer tournaments. It eased up a bit as he got older, thankfully. Hang in there—sounds like you're doing everything right, even if it doesn't always feel that way...
