How often do you actually swap out your night guard?

Curious if people are replacing theirs every year or just hanging on till it falls apart. Mine’s a bit yellow but still hanging in there… is that gross? What’s everyone else doing?

Mine’s definitely seen better days too—got a little yellow tint and some bite marks, but it still fits fine. I used to swap them out every year when my dentist suggested it, but honestly, they’re not cheap and my insurance doesn’t always cover replacements. As long as it’s not cracked or smelling funky, I just keep cleaning it and rolling with it. Doesn’t feel gross to me, but I know some folks are more particular...

Mine’s basically a survivor at this point—got some gnarly chew marks and it’s more beige than clear, but hey, still does the job. Dentist side-eye is real, though. I’m not swapping it until it’s cracked or smells like a science experiment. Those things cost way too much for a yearly upgrade. If it ain’t broke (or stinky), I’m good.

Totally get the sticker shock—those custom guards are wild expensive. But I have to admit, I’ve seen a few too many “survivors” come through the office that were basically hanging on by a thread (or, uh, a chewed-up edge). I used to hang onto mine for years too, but after one started getting these little cracks and rough spots, I ended up with some gum irritation that took weeks to clear up. Didn’t even realize it was the culprit until my hygienist pointed it out.

Honestly, if yours is still comfy and not giving you any weird smells or sharp edges, you’re probably fine for now. Just keep an eye out for any changes in fit or new rough patches. Sometimes those little nicks can trap bacteria even if you’re cleaning it. Not saying you have to swap every year—just maybe don’t wait until it’s a full-blown science experiment... learned that one the hard way.

Reading about the gum irritation is kind of making me second guess my “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” approach. Mine’s got some yellowing too (I clean it every morning but still…), and I keep worrying about bacteria even though it doesn’t smell or feel weird. I’m super anxious about dental stuff, so the idea that tiny cracks could cause issues is honestly stressing me out a bit. Guess I’ll keep a closer eye on mine for any changes—didn’t even realize those little rough spots could be a problem.
