"Mine hasn't vanished yet, but now I'm paranoid—any tips on pet-proofing dental gear?"

Haha, I totally get the paranoia...my dog once decided my retainer case was his new chew toy. Thankfully, the retainer itself survived (barely). Now I keep everything dental-related in a drawer that's too high for him to reach. Maybe try something similar? Or even one of those snap-lock containers—they're pet-proof enough to ease anxiety, at least for me. Good luck keeping your gear safe from furry thieves...they're sneakier than we think.

I feel this paranoia, too...my cat has a weird obsession with knocking things off counters, and my mouthguard case was her favorite target for a while. I ended up getting one of those small zippered pouches (the kind people use for earbuds or chargers) and putting my dental stuff inside that, then hiding it in a drawer. It seems to have thrown her off the scent so far, but I'm still checking every morning just to be sure, lol. Honestly, pets seem to see dental gear as some kind of challenge—like they're on a mission to test our anxiety levels. Hope you find a good hiding spot soon.

I've noticed pets seem oddly fixated on dental gear too—my dog once chewed through my retainer case like it was a chew toy. Do you think it's something about the scent or maybe the texture of the plastic that attracts them? I'm considering switching to a metal or silicone case, but I'm not sure if that would actually help or just make it more interesting for him... Has anyone tried alternative case materials with success?

My cat once got obsessed with my nightguard case—I swear, she treated it like some rare treasure I'd hidden just for her. I think you're onto something about the scent or texture, honestly. Maybe the saliva residue or the subtle smell of toothpaste makes them curious? Anyway, I did switch to a silicone case thinking it'd be less appealing, but nope... she chewed that one up too. Eventually, I went with a metal tin (like those little mint tins) and that finally did the trick. She sniffed it suspiciously but lost interest fast—probably too hard and cold for her liking.

So yeah, metal might actually help you out here. Silicone still has that chewy texture pets seem to love, so I'd skip that option personally. Don't worry though, you're definitely not alone in this weird struggle... pets are strange little creatures sometimes!

You're definitely onto something with the saliva or toothpaste scent theory. I've noticed patients mentioning similar stuff with retainers and aligners—pets seem weirdly drawn to dental appliances in general. Maybe there's some subtle scent we humans just can't pick up on? And silicone... yeah, it's softer and probably feels nice to chew on, so no surprise your cat went for that too.

Good call on switching to metal though. Mint tins are actually a pretty smart idea—compact, secure, and apparently pet-proof. I'll have to remember that tip for other patients dealing with curious pets. Honestly, pets getting into dental gear is way more common than you'd think. I've had people come in sheepishly admitting their dog ate their retainer or their cat knocked their aligner under the fridge. You're definitely not alone in this quirky battle.

Anyway, glad you found a solution that works. Cats really do keep life interesting, don't they?
