I've seen this happen a few times with patients—mouthwash can definitely be a bit harsh if it's not diluted. Most retainers and mouthguards are made from pretty durable materials, but soaking them in strong antiseptics regularly can eventually cause minor surface changes or make them feel tacky, like your friend's experience.

Usually, rinsing thoroughly and letting it air dry does the trick, as you've already mentioned. But if you're looking for something gentle yet effective, I'd recommend trying denture cleaning tablets every now and then. They're specifically designed to clean dental appliances without damaging the material. Just drop one tablet into warm water, let your retainer soak for about 15-20 minutes, then rinse it off. Easy and safe.

Also, mild soap and water is perfectly fine for daily cleaning—it's simple and reliable. Honestly, sometimes simpler is better when it comes to dental appliances. Glad you haven't had any issues so far though...sounds like you're already doing a great job taking care of it!

I've actually tried denture tablets myself (got a cheap pack at the dollar store) and they work surprisingly well. Though honestly, soap and water seems just as effective for daily use...and easier on the wallet. Anyone else mysteriously lose their cases, or is it just me?

I've heard the denture tablet thing before, but honestly, soap and water might not cut it long-term. Mouthguards can harbor bacteria pretty easily, and regular soap doesn't always eliminate tougher germs effectively. Personally, I switched to a mild antibacterial mouthwash soak every few days—it's affordable, easy, and gives me peace of mind. As for the disappearing cases...I swear mine vanish into thin air too. Maybe they're hanging out with all my missing socks somewhere.

Haha, glad I'm not the only one losing cases left and right...I swear there's some secret dimension they're all escaping to. I've done the mouthwash soak too, works pretty well. But honestly, every now and then I toss mine in boiling water for a quick sanitize—just gotta be careful not to warp it!

Haha, the boiling water trick is definitely a lifesaver—I learned that the hard way after warping mine into something resembling abstract art. Now I stick to hot-but-not-boiling water, just to stay on the safe side.

But seriously, the disappearing cases thing is real. I once found mine weeks later wedged between the couch cushions, along with a TV remote and a sock (just one sock...still no clue where its partner went). Since then, I've started keeping a backup case stashed in my nightstand drawer. It's saved me more times than I'd like to admit, especially when I'm half-asleep and fumbling around in the dark.

Also, quick tip: if you're using mouthwash to soak, make sure it's alcohol-free. The alcohol-based ones can dry out and crack the mouthguard over time—learned that from my dentist after she gave me a gentle scolding.
