“The edges on mine were super uncomfortable, almost like they hadn’t smoothed out after molding.”

That’s exactly what bugged me about the boil-and-bite ones. I kept trimming and sanding, but still ended up with a sore spot on my gums every morning. Custom guards felt bulky at first, but after a week, I barely noticed them. Did anyone else have issues with speech or drooling when switching to custom? For me, it took a bit to get used to, but the comfort won out.

That transition period with custom guards is real—lots of patients mention the bulk at first, and a few have told me about increased drooling or a slight lisp. Most adapt pretty quickly, though. Curious if anyone’s noticed a difference in how long their custom guard lasts compared to boil-and-bite? I’ve seen some folks get years out of a well-made one, but it probably depends on how hard you grind.

Interesting point about the bulkiness—my custom one definitely felt weird at first, but after a week or so I barely noticed it. I’m curious, does anyone actually prefer the feel of a boil-and-bite, even if it doesn’t last as long? I found mine warped after a few months, but maybe that’s just me grinding too much at night. Has anyone had issues with custom guards cracking or wearing out faster than expected?

I get what you mean about the custom ones feeling bulky at first. Mine took a few nights to get used to, but now I barely notice it. I’ve actually had a boil-and-bite before, and it felt softer but didn’t fit as well—plus, it warped after a couple months too. Haven’t had my custom guard crack yet, though I do grind pretty hard. Maybe it depends on the material or how thick they make it? Either way, you’re not alone with the adjustment period.

Yeah, that adjustment period with the custom ones is real. I remember thinking mine felt like a mouthful of plastic the first couple nights. But after a week, I barely noticed it. My old boil-and-bite got all floppy and yellow after a while... not great for confidence or comfort. I do think thickness and material make a difference—mine’s pretty thin but still tough, so maybe that’s why it hasn’t cracked even though I’m a major grinder. It’s wild how something that feels awkward at first can end up being totally normal.
