I get what you mean about the custom ones eventually feeling normal, but honestly, I’m still struggling with mine. Maybe I’m just extra sensitive or anxious, but it feels bulky and I can’t stop thinking about it at night. My dentist said I’d get used to it, but it’s been almost two weeks and I’m not there yet. Weirdly, my old boil-and-bite was gross but at least I could forget it was in sometimes… maybe I just need more time?

My kid just got a custom one a few months back, and honestly, it’s been a struggle for her too. She keeps saying it feels “weird and huge,” especially at bedtime. I totally get the anxiety part—sometimes she’ll wake up and take it out because she can’t stop thinking about it. Her old boil-and-bite was pretty gross after a while, but she barely noticed it was there.

The dentist also told us she’d get used to the custom one, but we’re still waiting for that magic moment. I keep wondering if maybe some people just never fully adjust? Or maybe some of us are just more sensitive to having something in our mouths all night. We’ve tried little things like running it under warm water before bed or distracting her with an audiobook until she falls asleep.

I know these are supposed to be better for your teeth, but sometimes I miss the days when she didn’t complain about it so much... Not sure if that helps, but you’re definitely not alone in feeling this way.

That “weird and huge” feeling totally checks out—my nephew said the same thing when he switched to a custom one.

“Her old boil-and-bite was pretty gross after a while, but she barely noticed it was there.”
Funny how the gross ones are sometimes more comfortable, right? Did your dentist mention if the custom guard could be adjusted or trimmed a bit? I’m wondering if it’s just a thickness thing or maybe the edges are bugging her. Also, does anyone else’s kid have trouble talking with theirs in, or is that just us?

That “weird and huge” feeling is exactly what I’ve been dealing with too. I just got my first ever custom guard for nighttime grinding, and honestly, it feels like I’ve got a mouthful of plastic every time I put it in. My old boil-and-bite was kind of nasty by the end, but I could at least forget about it after a while. The dentist told me the custom one would feel less bulky, but I’m not convinced yet.

Did anyone else have to go back to get their custom guard adjusted? Mine’s rubbing the inside of my cheek a bit, and I’m not sure if that’s normal or if it’s something they can just trim down. The edges are way more noticeable than with the boil-and-bite. Part of me wonders if it’s just a matter of getting used to it, but part of me is like... do I really want to “get used to” something that feels this off?

Talking is a whole other thing. I tried reading out loud with mine in, just to see if I could get used to it, and I sounded like I’d just come from the dentist with a numb mouth. My partner laughed at me, which didn’t help, but also... fair. Are these things supposed to fit so tightly you can’t even speak properly? Or did mine just get made too thick?

I keep telling myself the gross feeling from the boil-and-bite was worse, but honestly, comfort-wise, it’s a toss-up for me right now. Maybe kids are just more adaptable? Or maybe they’re too distracted to care. Either way, I’m hoping this thing gets easier with time, because right now, the “custom” part feels more like “custom torture device” than anything else.

Anyone else find that it gets better after a week or two? Or did you have to go back for tweaks?

I totally get what you mean about the “custom torture device” vibe at first. When I switched to a custom guard, it felt way bulkier than I expected, and I couldn’t talk clearly either. For me, it took about a week before it stopped feeling so foreign, but I did end up going back to have the edges smoothed out—they just trimmed a bit and it made a big difference. If it’s rubbing your cheek, I’d say don’t tough it out—ask them to adjust it. No point suffering through if a quick fix might help. It really did get better for me after those tweaks.
