I get the appeal of custom guards, especially when you said,

“not having to nag him every night is priceless.”
But I actually had a different experience. My daughter hated her custom one—she thought it felt too tight and bulky. Weirdly enough, she stuck with the boil-and-bite after we trimmed it down a bit. I guess it really comes down to personal comfort and maybe even the way someone sleeps. That price tag still stings either way, though...

That’s interesting—my cousin’s custom guard also felt too tight at first, but her dentist adjusted it and she ended up liking it more than the boil-and-bite. Did you ever try getting the custom one adjusted for your daughter, or was it just uncomfortable no matter what? Wondering if some people just never get used to that snug fit...

Honestly, I think it depends on the person. My custom guard felt super tight at first too, but after my dentist shaved it down a bit and I wore it for a week or so, it actually started feeling normal. Still, my brother tried the same thing and couldn’t stand his—kept saying it was “suffocating.” Maybe it’s partly mental? I always figured the snug fit was just something you had to deal with for better protection.

Did your cousin have any trouble talking or sleeping with hers at first? That part took me a while to get used to.

I totally get where you're coming from. I just got my first custom guard a couple weeks ago, and honestly, I was convinced I’d never get used to it. The first night, it felt like my whole mouth was in a vice—super tight, and I kept waking up thinking I was choking or something. But after a few days, it started to feel less weird. Not exactly comfortable, but not unbearable either.

It’s kind of reassuring hearing other people say it took them time too. I kept worrying maybe mine was just made wrong or something. My dentist said the snug fit is normal and actually a good thing, but it’s hard not to overthink it when you’re lying there at 2am trying to fall asleep.

I haven’t tried the boil-and-bite ones, but my friend said those felt looser, which sounds nice in theory, but she ended up chewing through hers in a couple months. That kind of freaked me out because I don’t want to have to keep buying new ones.

I guess it’s just one of those things you have to give yourself time to adjust to. It’s definitely not fun at first, but it does get better. If you’re struggling with talking or sleeping, maybe see if your dentist can adjust it a bit? Mine did a quick tweak and it helped a lot.

Hang in there—it’s awkward at first, but you’re not alone.

I know what you mean about the custom guards feeling almost too snug at first. I was honestly worried mine was cutting off my circulation or something—my jaw felt super tense the first week. But after a while, it did settle down and now I barely notice it unless I think about it. The boil-and-bite ones sound easier at first, but I chewed through two of them in less than six months. Kind of a waste, honestly. Still, sometimes I wonder if a looser fit would help me sleep better... but then I'd probably just worry about it falling out or not working. It's always a trade-off.
