Why does every night guard feel like a mouthful of plastic?

I totally get where you’re coming from. The first time I wore a night guard, it felt like I was trying to sleep with a mouthful of Tupperware. It’s wild how something “custom fit” can still feel so bulky at first. For me, the soreness and awkwardness lasted around 10 days, maybe a bit longer. I was super aware of it every night, so you’re not alone in that. The “few nights” thing some dentists say is definitely optimistic for some of us.

Jaw soreness in the morning happened to me too. I think I was clenching more just because the guard felt foreign, which is annoying since it’s supposed to help with that! Eventually, my jaw calmed down once my brain got used to having the guard in there. If it doesn’t improve after another week or two, though, it might be worth having them check the fit. My dentist was chill about adjustments—no extra charge—so definitely don’t feel weird about asking. They expect a bit of fine-tuning.

Swallowing it? That’s a legit worry, I had the same thought! But honestly, once you see how big and awkward the thing actually is, it’s pretty much impossible unless you’re sleepwalking and trying really hard. It’s not going anywhere.

If you’re still miserable after a couple of weeks, I’d push for a refit or ask about different styles. Some people do better with the thinner “essix” style guards or just upper vs lower, depending on mouth shape. No shame in wanting something that actually feels comfortable, especially if you’re supposed to wear it every night.

Hang in there—it does get easier, but don’t just tough it out if it’s not working. Your jaw will thank you later.

Honestly, I’ve made hundreds of these things and I still remember the first time I wore one myself—felt like I was trying to sleep with a hockey puck in my mouth. Even with precise molds, there’s just no way to make it feel invisible right away. I’ll admit, I was skeptical about “getting used to it” but after about two weeks, I barely noticed it. Still, if the soreness sticks around or you’re waking up with headaches, don’t just power through—sometimes a tiny adjustment makes all the difference.

Did you ever feel like you were drooling more than usual when you first started wearing yours? I swear, I kept waking up thinking my pillow was soaked. I know they say you get used to it, but I still get nervous that maybe mine’s too thick or something. Is it normal to worry about accidentally swallowing it in your sleep, or am I just overthinking things?

- I totally get the drooling thing, but honestly, it didn’t last that long for me. First few nights, yeah, my pillow looked like a crime scene... then it just sort of stopped happening.
- About swallowing it—maybe I’m weirdly chill about this, but I never really worried I’d swallow mine? They seem way too bulky to accidentally gulp down. I feel like if anything, the bigger ones are even less likely to move around.
- The “too thick” thing is interesting. Mine’s pretty slim and still felt massive at first. Maybe it’s not actually thickness, just that anything in your mouth overnight feels huge until you adjust?
- It’s definitely normal to overthink all this stuff though. I kept waking up to check if it was still there or if I was drooling everywhere. Guess our brains just need time.
- If it keeps bugging you, maybe ask your dentist about a thinner one? But I wouldn’t stress about swallowing it... seems super unlikely.

I swear, the first night I wore mine, I felt like I was trying to sleep with a mouthful of LEGOs. Took me forever to stop obsessing over it. The drooling did calm down after a week or so, but wow, those first mornings... not cute. I’ve never worried about swallowing it either—mine’s so chunky I’d have to unhinge my jaw like a snake. Guess our mouths just need time to stop freaking out about the new roommate.
