How long do those metal tongue cleaners actually last?

I hear you—those “lifetime” promises always sound good until real life kicks in. I’ve had a couple go wobbly or get weird spots after a year or so, even with regular cleaning. My kid’s dentist said it’s fine to swap them out if they start looking off, since bacteria can hide in scratches you can’t even see. I do rinse with hot water and soap, but honestly, sometimes I just grab a new one when it feels gross. No shame in playing it safe.

That’s pretty much my approach too. I know they market these things as “lifetime” tools, but honestly, after a year or so mine always seem to develop those little stains or weird bends. Stainless steel isn’t invincible—it gets scratched up over time, and then you’re just giving bacteria a cozy hiding spot. I’d rather spend a few bucks on a new one than risk it, especially since tongue cleaners aren’t exactly a big investment.

I get the concern, but I’ve had the same stainless steel tongue scraper for like three years now. I just boil it every couple weeks and it seems fine—no weird smells or stains. Maybe I’m being too chill about it, but unless it’s actually bent or rusting, I don’t see a reason to toss it so soon. Are those tiny scratches really that big of a deal if you’re cleaning it well?

That’s honestly been my question too. I get super anxious about germs and bacteria, but I’ve kept my stainless steel scraper for over two years now. I do the same—boil it every so often, give it a good scrub after each use. The scratches are there, but unless I see rust or it starts to smell weird, I can’t bring myself to just toss it out.

I know some people say the scratches can hide bacteria, but if you’re boiling it regularly, that should kill most stuff anyway, right? My dentist mentioned once that as long as it’s not visibly damaged or corroded, and you’re cleaning it properly, it’s probably fine. Still, I get paranoid sometimes and wonder if I should replace it more often just to be safe...but then again, nothing bad has happened yet.

Honestly, your routine sounds pretty solid. If you ever start noticing anything off about it (like weird texture or smell), maybe then swap it out. But I wouldn’t stress too much if it’s still in good shape and you’re keeping up with cleaning.

I’ve had mine for maybe four years now—stainless steel, too—and it’s still going strong. I get the worry about germs, but as long as you’re boiling and scrubbing it, I wouldn’t stress much. If it ever got rusty or just felt gross, I’d definitely swap it out, but so far, no issues. Sometimes the old stuff just lasts better than the new replacements anyway...
