Which one actually gets your teeth cleaner: blasting with water or good ol’ string floss?
String floss always seemed to get more gunk out for me, but yeah, the shredding drives me nuts too. My teeth are packed pretty tight, so sometimes I end up with bits of floss stuck, which is just... not fun. Water flossers felt nice on my gums and were less messy than I expected, but I still worried about missing stuff between teeth. My dentist once said water flossers are a good add-on, not a replacement. And yeah, even being careful, my gums bled for a while - turns out I was pressing too hard and just needed to be more gentle. It's a weird balance between doing enough and not overdoing it.
I totally get what you mean about string floss getting stuck - my teeth are super close together too, and I swear I’ve spent way too long fishing out bits of shredded floss. Do you ever worry about those little pieces staying wedged in there and making things worse? I switched to a water flosser when I got braces, mostly because the string just wasn’t happening anymore, but I still feel like it doesn’t always get the sticky stuff out. Has anyone actually had their dentist say water alone is enough? Or is it really just about getting in there with something, even if it’s not perfect?
I get the appeal of water flossers - my kid begged for one after getting braces, and honestly, anything that avoids the “floss string stuck between teeth” drama is a win in my book. But I’m still team string (even if it’s a pain). Our dentist basically said water flossers are great for blasting out the big stuff, but they’re not magic. Like, if you’ve got sticky gunk or that weird film, water alone kind of just... moves it around? My son tried to convince me that spraying his mouth was “good enough,” but let’s just say his next cleaning proved otherwise. Hygienist was not impressed.
I get paranoid about those little bits of shredded floss too, but at least you know it’s doing something. Water feels like cheating, even if it’s fun. Maybe I’m old school, but nothing beats that satisfying snap when you finally get the floss through. Well, except maybe not having to nag about it every night...
Totally get where you’re coming from - my teen swore the water flosser was a “miracle” for his braces, but after a few checkups, the hygienist could tell he’d been skipping string floss. I think it’s about finding what actually works (and sticks) for your family. That snap feeling is weirdly satisfying, even if it’s a hassle sometimes. You’re not alone in the nagging struggle...
I hear you on the “miracle” water flosser hype - my nephew was convinced his was basically a pressure washer for plaque. Problem is, water flossers are great for blasting away food bits, but they don’t always get that sticky stuff at the gumline like string floss does. I tell patients it’s like washing your car with a hose vs actually scrubbing it. Yeah, string floss is a hassle, but nothing beats that satisfying snap (unless you’re doing it wrong and launching it into your gums... been there).
