A tooth pushed sideways isn’t the same as one knocked out

If a child’s permanent tooth is displaced but still in its socket, how does the emergency dentist decide whether it needs to be repositioned and stabilized with a splint? I’m trying to understand how that differs from a tooth that has come completely out, since the injury and appropriate care aren’t the same.

While arranging urgent dental care, should a parent avoid touching or trying to move a displaced tooth, even if it looks obviously out of line? I’d also like to know what follow-up checks the dentist may recommend after treatment, and what questions are useful to ask at the visit.
