Knocked out tooth: anyone else try those instant repair kits?

Interesting, I actually thought the kit would hold up a little better than it did, but mine started crumbling after a couple of days too - especially after coffee, which I didn’t expect to be an issue. Has anyone tried those UV-cured dental repair kits? I’m curious if they’re any stronger, or if it’s just the same deal with a fancier package.

I totally get what you mean about the kit breaking down after a couple days - mine didn’t even make it through the weekend. The coffee thing caught me off guard too. I figured if it could handle a glass of water, it’d survive my morning latte, but nope. By Sunday, there were little bits in my mouth that definitely weren’t supposed to be there.

I actually did try one of those UV-cured kits last fall when I chipped a molar (long story involving popcorn kernels). It was kind of fun to use, honestly - felt a bit like doing arts and crafts on my own tooth. The light made it feel more “official,” but in the end, I don’t think it lasted much longer than the regular stuff. Maybe three or four days before it started wearing away at the edges, especially once I ate something hot. Didn’t totally crumble like the other ones, but still not what I’d call sturdy.

One thing that surprised me: the UV stuff did stick better at first, so biting down didn’t feel as sketchy. But once I had soup and coffee again, it softened up faster than I expected. Not sure if that’s just my luck or if heat is always a problem with those.

Honestly, these kits are okay for emergencies or if you need to look presentable for a day or two, but I wouldn’t trust them long-term. After my little experiment, I ended up back at the dentist anyway… which wasn’t great for my wallet, but at least now things don’t fall apart every time I eat toast.

If you find something that can survive both coffee and pizza night, let me know - I’m still searching too.

I’ve had pretty mixed results with those kits, but I actually had one hold up for almost a week - maybe I just got lucky? Hot drinks definitely seem to be the weak spot, though. For me, it was soup that did it in, not coffee. Still, I’d rather deal with a short-term fix than walk around with a gap... even if it means avoiding my favorite foods for a few days.

Totally get where you're coming from - walking around with a gap just isn’t an option for me either, even if it means skipping out on hot stuff for a bit. I’ve used those kits a couple times, and honestly, I’d say they’re hit or miss. One time it lasted through a weekend wedding, but another time it popped out after just one meal. Still, for a quick fix, it’s worth the minor hassle. You did well stretching it almost a week... that’s about as good as it gets in my experience.

I get the appeal of those kits, but did you ever worry about messing something up long-term? I tried one for a chipped front tooth and honestly, I was so paranoid about swallowing it or making things worse that I barely ate. My dentist said there’s a risk of trapping bacteria if it’s not sealed right. Is that just scare tactics, or have you had any issues after using them?
