Getting used to chewing with new dentures—anyone else struggle?

That whole “chew on both sides” thing is way harder than it sounds, right? I tried to follow my dentist’s advice but it just made me feel like I was doing some weird chewing gymnastics. Half the time I end up biting my cheek or getting food stuck under the denture and then I’m just over it. My confidence in adhesives isn’t great either. Sometimes I use a tiny bit and worry that it won’t hold, sometimes I go for more and get that gross taste all day. The taste is so random—sometimes minty, sometimes just... chemical.

Cutting everything small is basically my new normal too, which feels a little silly when you’re eating with other people. Like, here’s me with my baby-sized bites while everyone else is chomping away. I used to love crunchy stuff but now even toast feels like an extreme sport. I get what you mean about mashing food with your tongue—it’s like a weird fallback move when you don’t totally trust your teeth to stay put.

The one thing that helps me a bit is taking my time and trying not to stress if things go sideways (or if the denture does, haha). It’s not really something anyone prepares you for, and honestly, most people have no clue how much adjustment this all takes. I wish they’d give out a manual or something... or at least better tasting glue.

Anyway, you’re definitely not alone in the struggle. It’s awkward and sometimes kinda funny in a slapstick way, but it does get a little easier with practice—or maybe we just get used to being awkward about it? Either way, soft foods are my friends for now too.

Yeah, it’s wild how something as basic as eating can get so complicated. I totally relate to the “tiny bites” thing—feels awkward when you’re out, but honestly, I’d rather that than risk my denture flipping mid-bite. I’ve tried a few cheaper adhesive brands to save money, but some of them taste awful or just don’t hold up. Has anyone found an affordable adhesive that actually works and doesn’t taste like glue?

I get what you mean about the adhesives—some of them just leave this weird aftertaste and don’t last through a whole meal. But honestly, I’ve found that sometimes paying a little more for a mid-range brand actually saves money in the long run, since I use less and don’t have to reapply. The cheaper ones just never stuck for me, even if they claimed “all-day hold.” Weird how everyone’s experience is different, though... maybe it depends on the fit too?

Yeah, I’ve noticed the same thing with the cheaper adhesives. I tried to save a few bucks at first, but honestly, I was reapplying halfway through lunch and got pretty frustrated. It ended up costing more in the long run. Fit definitely matters too—I had to go back for a few adjustments before things started feeling right. Still figuring it out, but at least I don’t have to worry as much about the dentures slipping now.

Yeah, I totally get what you mean about the adhesives. I tried the cheap stuff too, thinking I’d save, but it just made things more stressful. I was always worried about my dentures slipping at work or during meals. Honestly, I’m still nervous eating out with friends because I’m not sure how things will hold up. Going back for adjustments helped a bit, but I still find myself second guessing every bite, especially with anything crunchy. The cost adds up, but the peace of mind is worth it... mostly.
