I’m in the middle of dealing with a dry socket (would not recommend, 2/10 experience) and I’ve tried both regular ibuprofen and the prescription painkillers my dentist gave me. Honestly, I can’t tell which is making more of a difference. Ibuprofen seems to take the edge off, but sometimes it just isn’t enough when it’s throbbing at night. The prescription stuff knocks me out but makes me feel kind of loopy and weird after.

Has anyone else compared these two for this kind of pain? Is it worth sticking with the stronger meds or do you just tough it out with ibuprofen and hope for the best? Curious what actually worked for you (and if you had any odd side effects).

Turns out, dry socket is as miserable as everyone says. Couldn’t sleep, eating was a joke (even soup hurt), and honestly, I started to dread brushing my teeth because it just made everything ache more.

The dentist packed it with some medicated stuff that tasted kinda like cloves and old socks (not my favorite combo), but it only helped for a few hours at a time. Ibuprofen dulled it a bit, but I still felt like I was walking around with a toothache from hell. Anyone else get stuck with this? How long did it last for you? Did you find anything that actually helped besides waiting it out?

I was chatting with my cousin yesterday who just had her wisdom teeth out, and she mentioned something called dry socket. I'd heard the term before but never really knew what it was. Turns out it's when the blood clot that forms after a tooth extraction gets dislodged or dissolves too soon, leaving nerves and bone exposed—ouch. She said it was one of the worst pains she's ever felt, even worse than the toothache itself.

Anyway, she told me something interesting: apparently, smokers and people who use straws right after extraction are way more likely to get it because the suction messes up the healing process. Also, poor oral hygiene can increase your risk since bacteria can interfere with healing. I had no idea about any of this stuff... kinda makes me glad I got mine out years ago without any issues.

Has anyone else heard of other weird or surprising things that can cause dry socket or ways to avoid it? Seems like there's a lot more to tooth extractions than just ice cream and painkillers, lol.

Okay, so I just had my wisdom tooth out last week, and guess what...dry socket. Ugh. Honestly, it's been pretty miserable. Dentist recommended gauze packs soaked in some medicated stuff, but my grandma swears by tea bags (something about tannins?). And then my coworker jumped in saying clove oil was the ONLY thing that worked for her.

Now I'm stuck juggling these weird home remedies while popping ibuprofen like candy. Um, I'm curious if anyone else has tried these? I kinda feel like a test subject at this point, lol.

Figured I'd toss up a quick poll to see what everyone's go-to is for dealing with dry socket pain:

What's your preferred remedy?
- Gauze pack from dentist
- Tea bags (grandma-approved)
- Clove oil
- Something else entirely (tell me below)

Honestly leaning toward tea bags tonight because gauze is getting annoying and clove oil tastes...interesting. Just really hoping this clears up soon because eating soup every day is seriously getting old.
