Pain relief that actually works for dry socket?

As soon as they packed it (I think it was some clove-y medicated stuff?), there was this weird mix of relief and embarrassment - like, wow, maybe I should’ve come in sooner.

Honestly, that’s the story of my life with dental stuff - trying to be tough at home, then crawling back to the dentist like a sheepish kid. Dry socket pain is next-level though, I swear. I tried every home “remedy” I could find (clove oil included... yuck, and it made my mouth feel like I’d licked a spice rack). Didn’t help much except for making me question my life choices.

I know people rave about salt water rinses, but when that throbbing kicks in? Forget it. Only thing that took the edge off for me was an ice pack on my cheek and popping ibuprofen like it was candy (not doctor-recommended, but desperate times). Once the dentist did the medicated dressing, I could finally unclench my jaw and stop pacing around like a caged animal.

Funny thing is, I was more worried about looking dramatic than the actual pain. Next time, I’m not waiting around - lesson learned.

That’s honestly the turning point for most people. Dry socket pain is brutal - no shame in needing professional help. I get the hesitation, but self-managing only goes so far when you’re dealing with exposed bone. The “clove-y” stuff (usually eugenol-based) works wonders, but yeah, it’s not exactly pleasant. You definitely aren’t alone in waiting too long; I’ve done the same and regretted it every time.

That clove taste still haunts me... I tried toughing it out at home with salt water rinses and pain meds, but nothing really touched the pain until the dentist packed the socket. I was so nervous about going in, but honestly, the relief was worth every bit of discomfort. Wish I hadn’t waited as long as I did - lesson learned.

- Totally get that “clove-y” aftertaste lingering… not my favorite flavor either.

“the relief was worth every bit of discomfort”
Same here - once the dentist packed mine, it was like night and day.
- Tried salt water and ibuprofen too, but honestly, nothing else really worked for me.
- Next time, I’m skipping the home remedies and heading straight in. Sometimes you just gotta bite the bullet (not literally, please).

That clove taste is the worst… I couldn’t get rid of it for days after they packed my socket. I tried every home remedy people suggested - tea bags, salt rinses, even honey (not sure why) - but honestly, nothing came close to the relief after the dentist stepped in. For me, ibuprofen barely touched it. I know some folks swear by the “wait it out” method, but after that experience, I’m 100% in favor of just going straight to the pros. No shame in admitting when you need real help.
