How do you cope when facing a dental redo?

Quick poll time—when you found out you needed a retreatment (like another root canal or crown redo), what helped the most with your nerves? Distraction, info, meds, talking it out? I usually just binge podcasts in the waiting room but curious what works for others.

Totally get the podcast thing—I've done that too, but honestly, I kinda need to know exactly what's up before I go in. Like, I ask a ton of questions and make the dentist walk me through it step by step. It weirdly calms me down more than any distraction. But if I start overthinking it, then yeah, music or a funny video helps. Never tried meds for nerves, though... anyone else just end up stress-eating mints in the waiting room?

I’ve definitely been that parent nibbling through half a pack of Tic Tacs while my kid’s in the chair. Do your nerves rub off on your kids at all? I always wonder if my anxiety makes it worse for mine or helps since I’m honest about it.

I get where you're coming from. I’ve sat there clutching my phone like it’s a life raft while my daughter gets her teeth checked, and I swear she picks up on my energy. I try to keep things light, but sometimes my nerves leak out anyway. That said, being honest has helped us both—she knows it’s okay to be nervous and that we’ll get through it together. I don’t think it’s ever made things worse, just more real.

That’s a really good point about honesty. I’ve always tried to hide my nerves, thinking it’d help my kid, but you’re right—it just kind of leaks out anyway. When I finally admitted I was anxious, it actually made the whole thing less tense. Funny how naming the fear sometimes takes its power away. I still default to distraction (music, puzzles), but maybe next time I’ll try being more upfront instead of pretending I’m fine.
