Second time around: what’s different about a root canal redo?

Has anyone had to get a root canal redone on the same tooth? I’m kinda freaking out because I just found out I need one. My original root canal was like five years ago, and now the tooth is hurting again, plus there’s some swelling. The dentist says it happens sometimes, but I’m honestly not sure what to expect this time. Is it worse than the first time? Did you guys have more pain or trouble recovering? Also, did your insurance cover it again or was it all out of pocket?

I remember the first one being annoying but not terrible, but now I’m worried because the tooth already had work done. Does retreatment usually work, or am I doomed for an extraction down the road? Would love to hear how it went for others—were you able to keep your tooth after all that?
