I totally get why you’d want some kind of guarantee with a root canal, especially when it’s not cheap and takes time out of your life. But honestly, I don’t know if it’s as rare as we’d all hope. I’ve had braces and a couple root canals (lucky me), and my endodontist said certain teeth—especially molars—are just trickier. Apparently some people have extra little side canals or roots that don’t show up easily on X-rays, so even with all the fancy tech, stuff can get missed.
One thing I’d push back on though is the idea that a second try is always just as easy as the first. My redo actually took longer because they had to remove the old filling material before cleaning everything out again. Recovery was fine, but my jaw was more sore since I was in the chair longer. Not awful, just more annoying than round one.
And about cost…if your dentist or insurance doesn’t cover a retreatment, it’s worth asking if they’ll work with you on payments or discounts. Mine knocked off part of the fee since it was the same tooth within a year. Not everyone does that, but it never hurts to ask.
I totally wish there was a way to know for sure it’ll work the first time, but teeth are weirdly unpredictable. At least if you do need a redo, most people say it’s not more painful or scary—just more of a hassle, like you said. If you’re worried about hidden canals or future problems, maybe ask if your dentist uses those 3D scans? They’re supposed to help spot tricky stuff before starting.
Anyway, I get the frustration. Dental stuff always seems to find new ways to stress us out...

Yeah, I hear you. I’ve had two root canals and one needed a do-over after about eight months. Dentist said my molar had “surprise” little side canals—like bonus tracks on an album you didn’t want. The second time around was definitely longer and my jaw was stiff for a couple days, but honestly, pain-wise it wasn’t worse. I wish there was a punch card system or something—get your 5th canal free? Joking aside, asking about those 3D scans is smart. They caught stuff on mine that regular X-rays missed. Teeth really are just little mysteries sometimes...
I get the whole “teeth are mysteries” thing, but I’m not totally convinced 3D scans catch everything either. I had one before my last root canal—looked clear, dentist felt confident, but a few months later I was back in the chair anyway. Turns out there was a tiny canal hiding in plain sight. Maybe it’s just the luck of the draw sometimes? Not saying scans aren’t helpful, but I wouldn’t bank on them being foolproof. Teeth just love to keep us guessing...
I get where you’re coming from—scans aren’t magic, that’s for sure. But in my experience, they’ve actually caught stuff my regular x-rays missed. Had a molar that looked “fine” on the old films, but the 3D scan picked up a sneaky crack. Still, I totally get the frustration when a tiny canal slips through. Teeth have a way of throwing curveballs… but I do think the tech’s helped more than it’s hurt, at least for me.
Honestly, teeth are like that one friend who never texts back—just when you think you’ve got them figured out, they ghost you with a hidden canal or a mystery crack. I’ve seen scans save the day plenty, but yeah, sometimes even the fanciest tech misses stuff. It’s a game of dental hide-and-seek, and teeth are undefeated champs...
