I always worry something’s gonna get missed, even with all the new tech.

Totally get that—been there myself. I had a root canal redone once because they missed a canal too. Honestly, it’s wild how sneaky those little canals can be. Even with all the fancy equipment, some teeth are just tricky. Try not to stress too much about your braces, though. Most dentists are pretty thorough, and if something does get missed, they usually catch it down the line. Dental bills are the real horror story, though...

I get the concern, but honestly, with the tech we have now—CBCT scans, those crazy bright microscopes—it’s much less likely to miss a canal than it used to be. That said, no system’s perfect. Some roots are just wild, especially in molars. I’ve seen cases where even after double-checking, a hidden canal shows up months later on an X-ray. It’s frustrating, but not always because someone wasn’t thorough... sometimes teeth just don’t play by the rules.

Yep, teeth can be total drama queens. I mean,

“sometimes teeth just don’t play by the rules.”
Ain’t that the truth? Even with all the fancy gadgets, those sneaky extra canals love to hide out. Had a molar once that looked totally normal on scans—months later, bam, pain city and a mystery canal shows up. It’s like dental hide-and-seek, but with more ibuprofen. Doesn’t always mean the doc messed up, sometimes nature’s just stubborn.

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from—teeth really do have a mind of their own sometimes. But, I do think there’s more to it than just “nature being stubborn” or the tooth playing hide-and-seek. Sometimes, it’s not just about hidden canals. I’ve seen cases where someone’s root canal flared up again, but when we took a closer look, it turned out to be a tiny crack in the tooth itself or even an old filling that started leaking. Stuff that doesn’t always show up on those first scans.

I had a patient who swore their molar was fine after the first root canal—no pain, everything looked textbook. Six months later, they’re back with swelling. Turns out, the gum had a little pocket that kept trapping food. Not a missed canal, just bad luck and maybe some flossing that didn’t quite get the job done. We fixed the gum, not the root canal, and the tooth settled down. Sometimes the problem’s sneaky, but not always the tooth’s fault.

Tech’s come a long way, but it’s not perfect. Even 3D scans can miss stuff if a canal is super tiny or the anatomy’s weird. But I’ve also seen situations where a second set of eyes (or just a different angle on the X-ray) made all the difference. I guess what I’m saying is, yeah, teeth are drama queens, but sometimes it’s a combo of hard-to-spot issues, not just nature being stubborn or docs missing something.

And honestly, I wish there was a surefire way to guarantee every root canal sticks the first time. But teeth love to keep us guessing... and reaching for that ibuprofen, for sure.

Reading this just makes me even more nervous about my own teeth, honestly. I had braces for years and thought that was the end of my dental drama, but now I’m paranoid every time I get a weird ache in one of my molars. The idea that a root canal can fail because of something as tiny as a crack or a leaky filling is kind of wild to me. I always assumed it was just about the canals being missed, but now I’m wondering if there’s other stuff I should be worried about.

Has anyone ever had a root canal go bad because of gum issues? I’ve been told to floss more since my gums are “sensitive,” and now I’m second-guessing if I’m even doing it right. It’s so frustrating how you can do everything by the book and still end up with problems. Does anyone else feel like their teeth just have it out for them sometimes?
