- Totally agree with this:
“the only thing that got her to even try was a brush with her favorite cartoon on it.”
- In my experience, the “cool factor” matters way more than bristle type or oscillation speed for young kids.
- I’ve seen some kids love the buzzing of an electric brush, but others are just not into it at all. No single answer here.
- Consistency is key—whatever gets them brushing twice a day is the real win.
- Honestly, sometimes the manual is less overwhelming for little ones. The fancy features can wait till they’re older.
I get so stressed about getting my kid to brush at all, honestly. We tried an electric one with lights and sounds, but she hated the buzzing—said it was “too scary.” Ended up going back to a plain manual brush with a unicorn on it. At least now she’ll do it without a meltdown... I guess for us, less is more?
Gotta admit, I’m kinda on the fence with electric brushes for kids. I know they’re supposed to clean better and all that jazz, but my little dude was the same—absolutely freaked out by the noise. Thing is, we stuck it out for a bit, and after a week or two he actually started thinking it was “robot cool” instead of scary. Maybe it’s just one of those things where you gotta push past the weird phase?
Honestly though, if your kid’s brushing at all without a meltdown, you’re already winning. I do think the manual ones can work just as well if you’re helping out and making sure they’re not just chewing on the bristles (been there, done that). Sometimes the low-tech route is less headache... but man, I still love not having to do all the scrubbing myself with the electric.
Guess it’s really about what keeps the peace in your house. Just wish mine would stop pretending to brush the dog’s teeth with his...

Is it weird that I still get nervous about whether my kid’s actually doing a good job with a manual brush? Like, I’m always hovering and then worrying I’m stressing him out more. Does the electric one really clean better even if they’re just moving it around? Or am I just overthinking it... again.
Not weird at all—I still have flashbacks to my own mom hovering over me with the “did you brush ALL your teeth?” interrogation. I swear, sometimes it feels like I’m prepping my kid for a NASA launch instead of bedtime.
Here’s the thing: electric brushes definitely make it easier for kids (and honestly, lazy adults like me) to get a decent clean, even if their technique is… let’s call it “creative.” My son basically waves his around like a magic wand and somehow his dentist is still happy. I do think the vibration helps break up gunk better than a manual when they’re not super thorough.
But then again, I’ve met parents who swear by old-school brushing and their kids have zero cavities. Maybe it’s more about consistency than the brush type? I always wonder if we’re just trading one kind of stress (hovering) for another (worrying about batteries dying mid-brush). Has anyone had a kid actually prefer manual over electric? Mine treats the manual like it’s a punishment...
