Manual brushes definitely win for simplicity and cost, but I get what you mean about engagement. Some kids just zone out with electrics, thinking the brush will do all the work. Have you tried those manual brushes with built-in timers or lights? My niece loved one that flashed for two minutes and it kept her focused without the mess of tablets. Not a perfect solution, but it helped her stick with it.

Funny thing is, my nephew was the total opposite—he’d get bored with manual brushes and end up sword-fighting in the bathroom. Once we got him a basic electric one, he actually started brushing longer because he liked the buzzing feeling (and pretending he was a robot). I get the appeal of flashy lights and timers, but for some kids, the gadget factor is what keeps them engaged. Maybe it’s just about finding what motivates your kid... whether that’s disco lights or pretending to be a cyborg.
My youngest was all about the manual brush until he realized his older sister’s electric one made a noise like a spaceship taking off. Suddenly, he’s begging for one too—never mind that he’d barely brush for 30 seconds before. Now he’s in there for ages, narrating some epic battle between plaque and his “laser brush.” Honestly, I thought electrics were just a gimmick, but if it gets him to brush without a meltdown, I’m not complaining.
I do wonder, though—do those fancy ones with built-in music and timers actually help, or is it just more stuff to break (and cost more)? I’m all for a gadget if it makes life easier, but I’ve been burned by “kid-proof” tech before. Anyone had luck with the basic models holding up, or do they all end up in the junk drawer eventually?
That’s hilarious about the “laser brush”—my kid does the same spaceship sound effects and suddenly brushing is the most exciting thing ever. I’m with you on the skepticism about all the bells and whistles, though. We tried one of those musical brushes that’s supposed to play a song for two minutes, but it broke after like three weeks (and honestly, the song was stuck in my head way longer than that).
Do the basic electric ones actually last, or do they all eventually end up with toothpaste gunk in the charging port? I’m also wondering if kids just lose interest once the novelty wears off... like, is this a long-term solution or are we just buying ourselves a few meltdown-free months? Anyone’s kid actually stick with it after the spaceship phase?

Same question here. We tried a basic electric one (no music, just a timer) and it’s still going after six months, but the charging port definitely gets gross if you’re not on top of cleaning it. My kid got bored after a while though. Now it’s back to the usual negotiations every night... Maybe it just buys you a little time before the novelty fades.
