are dental sealants really worth the hype?

I got dental sealants put on my kid's teeth last year, and now he's got cavities anyway. Kinda frustrating, you know? Wondering if others had better luck or if it's just marketing hype...

Yeah, I feel this. I had sealants done as a kid and still ended up with cavities...guess my teeth were just rebels determined to defy dentistry, lol. But honestly, sealants aren't magic shields—my dentist said they're more like extra insurance. Still gotta floss and brush like crazy. But hey, at least your kid probably got a cool sticker out of it, right? Mine were always dinosaurs...

My grandkids went through the same thing—sealants done, but cavities still popped up here and there. What I've learned over the years is that sealants are helpful, but they're definitely not foolproof. Think of them like a raincoat—great for keeping a lot of water off, but if it's pouring heavily, you're still gonna get wet spots. Sealants cover those deep grooves on the chewing surfaces where food likes to hide, but cavities can still form between teeth or along gum lines. Brushing and flossing regularly is still key, along with keeping sugary snacks in check (easier said than done with kids, I know...). Did your dentist mention whether the cavities were in spots covered by sealants or somewhere else? Sometimes knowing exactly where the issue is helps figure out how effective they've been.

My dentist recommended sealants when I was younger, and honestly, my experience was pretty similar. They definitely helped cut down on cavities in those deep grooves, but I still ended up with a couple cavities between teeth. The dentist explained it to me like this: sealants are great at protecting the chewing surfaces, but they don't do much for the spaces between teeth or near the gums. Those areas still need regular flossing and brushing to stay cavity-free.

I think the raincoat analogy is spot-on. Sealants aren't a magic fix, just another layer of protection. For me, the cavities I got were always in spots the sealants didn't cover, so I wouldn't say they're useless—just not a complete solution. Keeping up with regular dental visits and good hygiene habits made the biggest difference overall.

Had sealants as a kid too, and yeah, they helped some but weren't foolproof. Curious though—do dentists ever reapply them after cavities get filled, or is it a one-time thing? Never really thought about that before.
