Funny, I’ve actually seen both sides of this—my niece got her sealants at a school clinic, and my own kid at our regular dentist. The school team took their time, but honestly, that’s not always a bad thing. Sometimes the “by the book” approach means fewer mistakes. On the flip side, I’ve seen dentist offices rush and miss spots, especially when they’re busy. I wouldn’t say one is always better, but careful application really does matter more than where you get it done. And yeah, free is hard to beat for parents...

I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve actually had a different experience with school clinics. Maybe it’s just my luck, but the last time my granddaughter got sealants at her school, the staff seemed a bit overwhelmed. I think they had a line out the door and were trying to get through everyone before lunch. The result? Her sealants didn’t last more than a year before they started chipping off. Meanwhile, my dentist—who’s been poking around my mouth for decades—takes his sweet time, but those things stick like glue.

I’m not saying dentists are perfect (mine once called me “young man” and I nearly fell out of the chair laughing), but I do feel like you get a bit more consistency at a private office. The free part is tempting, no argument there, but sometimes you end up paying for it later when you have to get the work redone. Maybe I’m just old-fashioned, but I’d rather fork over a few bucks for peace of mind... and for a dentist who remembers my name.

That’s honestly my biggest worry too. I totally get the appeal of free care at school clinics, but if the sealants don’t last, is it really saving money? Has anyone had luck asking their regular dentist about payment plans or discounts for preventive stuff like sealants? I’ve found some offices are pretty flexible if you just ask. Plus, I kinda like knowing who’s working in my mouth…

I totally get your hesitation. I’ve seen a few patients come in after getting free sealants at school events, and sometimes they just… didn’t hold up. Not always, but enough that it makes me a little nervous recommending it blindly. Payment plans are definitely a thing—my own dentist let me split up costs for my kid’s sealants last year. You’re right, there’s something reassuring about knowing the person doing the work, especially when it’s your teeth.
