Surprised by how minty fluoride gel tastes?

I learned the other day that those fluoride gels you can use at home are actually way more concentrated than regular toothpaste. I always thought it was just a fancier paste, but nope—apparently it’s a whole different thing. I tried one for the first time and wow, the mint flavor was intense (and weirdly sweet?). Anyone else notice that, or is it just me? Wondering if there are other flavors out there that don’t taste like I’m eating a candy cane...

Yeah, I totally get what you mean. Those gels are like brushing with a candy cane dipped in mouthwash. I tried the bubblegum flavor once thinking it’d be a nice change—big mistake. It tasted like someone melted a pack of Hubba Bubba in a chemistry lab. If you ever see “fruit” flavor, don’t trust it either. I’m convinced dental flavors are just a dare at this point...

Haha, honestly, I kinda agree. The last time I had the “grape” one, it was like cough syrup but sweeter and somehow more artificial. Has anyone found a flavor that’s actually tolerable, or are we all just picking the least bad option?

I was super nervous before my first cleaning, and the hygienist offered me “bubblegum” flavor because she said it’s popular with kids. Maybe that should’ve been a warning sign... It tasted like someone melted down a handful of old Halloween candy and mixed it with medicine. I tried mint the next time, thinking it’d be safer, but it was so strong my eyes watered. I honestly don’t know how people pick! The flavors all feel like they’re trying too hard to cover up something weird underneath.

The “trying too hard to cover up something weird” comment is spot on. I swear, no matter what flavor I pick, there’s always this underlying chemical taste that just lingers. Mint is supposed to be the safest bet, but it’s like they cranked up the intensity to mask whatever’s underneath—and it ends up feeling almost medicinal. I tried grape once (figured, why not?), but it was basically cough syrup in gel form.

Honestly, the concentration makes sense now that you mention it—my dentist said the same thing about how much stronger these gels are compared to regular toothpaste. Makes me wonder if that’s why the flavors are so over-the-top, just to make it tolerable. Still, I’d rather deal with a slightly bland taste than feel like I’ve just eaten an entire pack of gum in one go. If they ever make a “plain” or less sweet version, sign me up.
