My mom kept saying “it’ll be fine,” but all I could think about was whether they’d slap metal on my teeth right away or just poke around. Ended up being mostly x-rays, molds (that goop is so gross), and a chat about “treatment options.” Did anyone else expect to walk out with braces on day one? Or have a totally different experience?

I swear, every time I think about getting braces, my stomach just knots up. It’s not even the pain (though, yeah, I’m not looking forward to that), it’s more like this weird anxiety about people staring or food getting stuck or just… having a mouth full of metal for months (or years? yikes). I know it’s supposed to be super common but honestly, it feels like everyone else is handling it way better than me.

My cousin said she got used to hers in a week but I can’t even imagine that. Did anyone else just dread the first appointment? Or have random panic about talking or smiling? I keep thinking maybe I’ll chicken out and go with those clear aligners, but then I hear they’re not for everyone either. Is there anything that actually helps calm the nerves, or do you just kinda get used to it eventually?

Picture this: you finally book your first orthodontist appointment because your teeth have been giving you attitude for years, but as soon as you sit in that chair, your brain just… blanks. Like, suddenly all those questions you had about pain, cost, how long it’ll actually take - poof, gone. And then you leave with a million regrets and zero answers.

Has anyone else worried about that happening? I keep thinking I’ll remember to ask about like, whether I can still eat popcorn (please say yes), or what happens if a bracket falls off at 2am on a Saturday, or if my insurance is even gonna cover any of this. But honestly, my mind tends to go full goldfish mode when I’m nervous.

If you’ve already had your first consult (or even just imagined it), what’s the one thing you wish you’d asked but didn’t? Or maybe something weird or unexpected that came up? Also… did anyone bring a list and was that super awkward, or actually helpful? Just trying to avoid walking out of there with more questions than answers, you know?

Quick poll for anyone who's had braces: how did you actually handle that first day? I remember mine - felt like I had a mouth full of metal and suddenly realized how much I took chewing for granted. For me, it was all about the ice cream and mashed potatoes, but my friend swore by cold smoothies and just didn't eat solids for like, two days.

Curious if most people tough it out and try to eat normal food, or just go full soft-food mode. Or maybe you had zero appetite because of the weird pressure? Also, anyone else spend half the day poking at their brackets with their tongue? That was a whole new habit I didn't know I'd develop.

Here's a quick poll:
1. Did you try to eat regular food that first day?
2. Did you stick to soft stuff (soups, yogurt, etc)?
3. Was the pain/discomfort worse than you expected, or not as bad?

Would love to hear any weird tips or comfort foods that got you through the first 24 hours. Did anyone else get those little wax things but have no idea what to do with them at first?

Saw this article today about how some teens are making TikToks about their first day with braces, and it got me thinking about my own experience (which was, uh, less glamorous). The news was saying a lot of kids are super nervous but end up finding out it’s not as bad as they expected. I remember feeling like my mouth was full of metal and I couldn’t stop poking at the brackets with my tongue. Eating anything that wasn’t mushy felt like an Olympic sport for the first week.

Did anyone else get that weird pressure feeling when they first put them on? I swear my teeth felt like they were humming. Or maybe that was just anxiety, lol. Curious if anyone actually had a positive first day, or is it just rough for everyone at the start?

I just found out yesterday I'm gonna need braces, and honestly, I'm kinda freaking out about it. I mean, I get that tons of people have them and it's not a huge deal, but for some reason the idea of having metal glued to my teeth for months (or years??) is making me super anxious. Like, what if I look weird or can't talk properly or something? And don't even get me started on the pain - my friend said her mouth hurt for days after getting hers tightened, ugh.

I know I'm probably overthinking it (typical me lol), but it's been keeping me up at night. I've tried googling stuff to calm down but honestly reading random horror stories online was NOT helping at all. So now I'm here hoping someone can share their own experiences. Did anyone else feel super nervous before getting braces? How'd you deal with it? Or did you just sorta get used to it after a while?

Any tips or stories would be really appreciated...I'm kinda desperate here lol.
