Man, the popcorn ban is real. I swear, I had dreams about sneaking a single kernel and then immediately regretting it. I was a water flosser skeptic at first too—figured I’d end up soaking my bathroom (and myself) more than cleaning anything. Ended up caving after a few months because the threaders were driving me nuts. Gotta admit, it’s not as messy as I thought, but there’s definitely a learning curve... and my cat was not impressed the first time I tried it.

The popcorn ban hit me hard too—never realized how much I’d miss it until it was off limits. First day in braces, I remember just feeling super awkward. My teeth were sore, and I kept poking the inside of my mouth with the brackets. Ended up sticking to mashed potatoes and yogurt for a while.

I was also pretty skeptical about water flossers. Thought it was just another gadget, but after a week of wrestling with those tiny threaders, I gave in. Honestly, I still get splash-back sometimes, but it’s way less frustrating than threading floss through every bracket. My dog freaked out the first time I turned it on—he thought it was some kind of weird bath time.

It gets easier after the first week or so. The soreness fades, and you get used to the routine (even if you have to say goodbye to popcorn for a bit).

Not gonna lie, I’m still not sold on water flossers.

Maybe it’s just me, but I actually found the threaders easier once I got the hang of it—less mess, more control. Plus, my bathroom mirror doesn’t look like a carwash exploded every night. Guess it’s just what you get used to?

I have to admit, the “carwash exploded” image made me laugh… and yeah, water flossers can get a bit wild if you’re not careful. I’ve seen more than a few patients come in talking about how their first week with a water flosser ended with them (and their bathroom) looking like they lost a water balloon fight. It’s definitely not for everyone.

Honestly, I think it really does come down to what you get used to. Some folks swear by those little threaders because you can feel exactly where you’re going, and there’s something satisfying about getting in there and doing it yourself. On the other hand, others just can’t stand the fiddly part and would rather deal with a bit of splash-back than try to thread floss through every bracket after a long day.

I remember one teen telling me she’d rather clean her mirror every night than spend an extra ten minutes trying to thread floss between wires. Meanwhile, her brother was the total opposite—he’d rather take his time with the threader and keep things tidy. It’s funny how different people adapt.

If you’ve already got the hang of the threader and it feels less messy, that’s honestly a win. There isn’t really a “right” answer here—just whatever keeps your gums happy and your teeth clean. The first days in braces are rough enough without adding extra stress over gadgets or splashes.

For what it’s worth, I always tell people: whichever method you’ll actually *do* is the best one for you. And hey, if your mirror isn’t covered in water spots every night, you’re already ahead of the game compared to half my patients…

That first week with braces, I tried both—threaders and a water flosser. Honestly, I ended up with toothpaste on my shirt and water spots everywhere. But once I figured out the threader, it actually felt kind of meditative… less chaos for sure. Still takes patience, though.
