Weirdest things that actually help with braces pain

Not gonna lie, I’m actually the opposite when it comes to hot vs cold for braces pain. I know everyone swears by ice and popsicles, but for me, a warm compress or even a mug of not-too-hot tea sometimes helps loosen things up. Maybe it’s just my nerves, but the heat seems to dull the ache instead of making it worse.

“I’ve tried the soup thing too, but honestly, anything warm just seemed to make my mouth throb even more.”

Weirdly enough, soup’s been my go-to comfort food after every adjustment. I just make sure it’s not piping hot—more like cozy-warm. That plus some mashed potatoes and I’m set.

- I do agree about missing crunchy snacks. There are days when I’d trade all the ice cubes in the world for a single potato chip.
- Popsicles are great until you accidentally bite down... been there, regretted that.
- Have you tried yogurt? Cold-ish but not icy, and super gentle on sore teeth.

Guess everyone’s mouth is wired differently. If cold works for you, stick with it—but if you ever feel like switching things up, a little warmth might surprise you.

Interesting, I’ve always found cold stuff numbs my teeth way better—like, ice packs are my default after every tightening. Warm things just seem to make the throbbing worse for me, almost like it ramps up the sensitivity. Maybe it’s just how my nerves react, but I’ve never had much luck with tea or soup. Funny how different everyone’s pain triggers are...

I totally get this. I used to swear by cold stuff too—frozen grapes were my weird go-to after adjustments. Tried warm compresses once and honestly, it just made my gums feel even puffier. Nerves are so unpredictable...

That’s wild, I thought warm tea would help me, but it just made my teeth ache more. Cold stuff like popsicles or even ice water seems to make it tolerable for a bit. Is it normal for the pain to feel way worse at night? I keep waking up with sore jaws and I’m not sure if that’s just me overthinking it or if everyone goes through this…

Nighttime is always the worst for my kiddo too. It’s like as soon as the house is quiet, suddenly every tooth decides to start throbbing. We tried the warm stuff at first, but honestly, popsicles and ice packs worked way better for her. The sore jaw thing happened a lot—she’d clench her teeth in her sleep without realizing. We ended up putting a soft washcloth between her teeth at night (orthodontist said it was fine) and it seemed to help a bit with the jaw pain. Hang in there...it does get easier after a while.
