Why does it feel like dentists only want to throw antibiotics at gum problems?

I’ve had two dentists give totally opposite advice for the same issue—one wanted antibiotics “just in case,” the other thought it was overkill and wanted to see if cleaning and better brushing would help first.

Honestly, I’ve run into this too, but I kind of appreciate when a dentist is cautious. After a bad infection that snuck up on me once, I get why some lean toward antibiotics. Still, I agree it’s confusing when there isn’t a clear reason given. Sometimes it’s just their comfort level or maybe how aggressive they think the issue is. But yeah, more explanation would definitely help ease the anxiety.

I totally get where you're coming from. A while back, I had a dentist who prescribed antibiotics for a sore gum spot, but the next time, a different dentist just did a deep cleaning and said to watch it. Honestly, I felt better knowing they weren’t just handing out meds, but it was nerve-wracking not knowing which approach was “right.” Has anyone ever asked their dentist to walk them through why they’re choosing one path over another? I wonder if most are open to that or just want to move on to the next patient...

I’ve actually pressed a few dentists for details, and honestly, the responses have varied. Some took time to explain, others seemed rushed. But I wouldn’t say most are just eager to move on. Sometimes I think it’s more about how busy the office is than their willingness. There’s also a lot of gray area with gum issues—antibiotics vs. deep cleaning isn’t always a clear-cut decision. I’ve learned that pushing for an explanation helps, even if it feels awkward in the moment.

I get this a lot—patients think we have a secret stash of antibiotics we’re just dying to hand out. Truth is, most of us would rather avoid them unless there’s a real infection brewing. Deep cleanings (scaling and root planing) are usually the gold standard, but it’s not always a one-size-fits-all deal. Sometimes you’re right, the waiting room’s packed and we try to keep things moving, but I promise, we’re not just trying to get to lunch early. If you want the details, just ask—most of us love talking teeth, maybe a little too much.

That actually makes me feel a bit better. I used to get super anxious every time my dentist mentioned antibiotics, like maybe they were skipping something important. Last year, I pushed for more info and it turned out I didn’t even need them—just a deep cleaning and some extra flossing. I still worry sometimes, but hearing the reasoning behind it helps me trust the process more.
