Had a bit of a scare with my dental implant last month—redness, swelling, the works. My dentist gave me two options: start on antibiotics or go in for local cleaning/debridement (basically a deep clean around the implant). I went with antibiotics because, honestly, it just seemed easier and less scary than poking around in my mouth. But after a week, things improved only a little, and now I’m wondering if I should’ve just gone for the cleaning straight away.

I’ve read that local debridement can be more effective for getting rid of the actual gunk that causes infection, but then again, antibiotics seem less invasive and you can just take them at home. On the flip side, I hear antibiotics can mess up your gut and sometimes don’t even work that well if there’s already a lot of buildup around the implant. My stomach was definitely not happy after a few days on them.

Anyone here had to pick between these two? Did one work better than the other? Or maybe you had to do both? Also curious if anyone’s had any horror stories with either option. I’m kind of dreading having to go back in case they want to poke around more this time... but I guess anything’s better than losing the implant.

Would love to hear which route people have found more successful or less miserable. Did insurance cover both? How long did it take before things felt normal again?

I totally get the hesitation about debridement—it sounds way more intense than just popping some pills. But from my experience, antibiotics alone didn’t do much when I had a similar issue. The infection calmed down a bit, but the swelling and redness stuck around until they actually cleaned around the implant. Not the most comfortable thing ever, but honestly, it was over pretty quick and things improved a lot faster after that. My insurance covered both (after some paperwork gymnastics), but the cleaning took a couple days to really settle down. Gut-wise, I felt way better off the antibiotics too.
