Did you know that using regular toothpaste can actually scratch up your Invisalign trays and make them go cloudy? I always thought toothpaste was safe for, like, everything teeth-related. Anyone have a weird cleaning hack that actually works?

I totally fell for the toothpaste thing too—my trays got all foggy after a week and I couldn’t figure out why. Someone suggested using unscented antibacterial soap and a super soft toothbrush. It sounds weird, but it actually keeps them clearer than anything else I’ve tried. Just gotta rinse really well so you don’t taste soap all day...

We ran into the same issue with my daughter’s aligners—she’s 12 and was convinced brushing with toothpaste would make them “extra clean.” Instead, they turned cloudy almost instantly. I never even thought about using soap until her orthodontist mentioned it. Do you just use any unscented antibacterial, or is there a particular brand that works best? I’m always a little hesitant about the soap thing, but I guess if you rinse really well, it’s fine. Have you ever tried those cleaning crystals they sell? We used them once or twice, but honestly, they seemed kind of pricey for what they are.

Does anyone else worry about their kid accidentally swallowing some of the soap if they don’t rinse enough? Maybe I’m just being overprotective, but I feel like I’m constantly reminding her to rinse, rinse, rinse...

My son did the exact same thing with toothpaste—he thought scrubbing harder would make them sparkle, but they just got all foggy and weird-looking. We switched to a plain, unscented liquid soap (I use Dr. Bronner’s, but I’m not super picky as long as it’s not heavily perfumed). I get the worry about swallowing soap... I’m always hovering in the background like a rinse police officer. The cleaning crystals seemed like a rip-off to me, too. Honestly, nothing beats a good rinse and some patience.

I’m with you on the cleaning crystals—those little packets felt like a money grab after a while. I tried using them for a couple weeks, but honestly didn’t notice much difference compared to just rinsing and brushing gently (with a soft toothbrush, no toothpaste). Funny you mention Dr. Bronner’s, because I’ve used that too—just a tiny drop, then rinse the heck out of them. I always worry about any soapy taste sticking around, but if you rinse long enough it seems fine.

One thing I learned the hard way: don’t use hot water. I warped a set by accident once and had to pay for replacements… not cheap. As for hacks, someone suggested soaking in diluted white vinegar once a week for stubborn buildup. It smells weird, but it actually helped clear up some cloudiness for me. Just make sure to rinse really well after.

Honestly, sometimes I wonder if keeping aligners clear is just impossible after a while—mine always get a bit cloudy before it’s time to switch trays anyway. Maybe that’s normal?
